Given the funeral theme, I would recommend "remained" instead of "left."

This gave me a bad vibe. I wonder what they aren't talking about. Was it abuse in the physical firm that took the child? Was it drugs or alcohol or suicide that ended the promising life. Very moody. Gretchen

And in some cultures the Chrysanthemums are the funeral flower. In France it is and I remember when my cousin's son died, everyone brought a single white chrysanthemum. I liked your word play about the mums and keeping mum.

In Spain chrysanthemum is the popular flower for funerals too. I like the idea of of everyone bringing one white mum to the funeral.
