What is this poem's structure called? I can see a structure. The rhyme scheme is aabba. I'm not sure about meter. The poem's topic is poignant. So many people right now have dementia, including my mother and father. It's sad to see their skills going away, but the good thing is your daughter still knows how to play, and thus life continues. I'm thinking of starting to do piano lessons, and make sure that others can play when I'm gone too.

Hi Bill,
This is so sad. To lose such a gift all of a sudden and at such a time is such a loss.
Congrats on placing third in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Happy Holidays.
Joan

Dear Bill, I was going through your portfolio and found this poem, I'm sorry I didn't see it earlier.

I could feel your pain in each word. Dementia is a wicked illness, and so very sad. My neigbours wife has it, he was 100 years old last week, and his wife in her 90's. He told me, that, 'she isn't my Mavis anymore' I could have wept.
The saddest part has to be when they know they are losing their memories and can't do anything about it. I'll keep you both in my prayers. I'm so sorry, my friend. Love and hugs, Sandra xx

This is heartbreaking. This period of dementia is when the person is still aware enough to realize that their memory is failing and the angst, anger, and sadness overtake them. As an RN who worked with Alzheimer's and all stages and types of dementia for 35 years, I feel this loss to the marrow.

Blessings...

Karenina

Out of sixth stars. This masterpiece is so strong in imagery and so deep in message that it put me standing next to you, watching the loss displace the gift. Your rhyming is brilliant in its simplicity. The structure is lyrical.
Thanks for a sweet, poignant read.

The notes made this very sad indeed. I certainly hope she still enjoyed hearing the music. I have never had any specific musical talent, but have had a strong love for those who can produce that beauty.

Good write my friend.

As a musician, I would find this so challenging. It's a skill that feels as natural as breathing, and to have it suddenly disappear would be like losing my sight or my vision. I can certainly empathise and feel very sorry for her.

Hi Bill,
You tell quite a story in your special rhyming poem. I hope your wife's problem is not too serious. Is it her vision? You and I seem to be in a similar state. My wife has passed out about 4 times this year. Something about the Vagus nerve. I don't understand it, and I don't like it. But it's out of my hands. She is 68 years old. We never know what old age will bring. I have been having a few dizzy spells... I'm 73. It's no fun dealing with health issues. I have to wonder... where are these "Golden Years" I've heard so much about???
Anyway, it must be so difficult for your wife to not be able to play the piano after so many years.
"six decades now silent
an emptiness now giant"
I play guitar in the worship team at church, and if I lost that for some reason, I'd be devastated. As it is, I have arthritis in my middle finger of my left hand. Sometimes it will lock on me right out of the blue. So far, I've been lucky on Sunday mornings. But what will I do if my finger gets any worse? I've played guitar since I was 15 years old!
Good Luck in the contest!
Cheers,
Kimbob

I used to laugh at the idea of taking pills and seeing doctors all the time. I now plan our days on my medical scheduler. Hope your finger has an easy cure. My wife passed out and broke her foot. Man!

Thanks for sharing the artwork, notes, and poem, Bill. I am very sorry to hear about your wife. I read some of your comments, and thoughts are with you and your family for what you are going through. You wrote a very good poem showing the impact on both you and your wife as she was unable to play what used to come so easy to her. The last verse speaks volumes about the feeling of emptiness. I hope that writing this has helped ease the burden if only in a small way. Know that many people here care.
