Hello Katharine,
you've brought up a good point. I don't usually look to see how many people have viewed the story I've written. Perhaps they open it, see it's me and just don't read it, I don't know. Perhaps part of the problem is that there are so many people to read, that if you take time to comment on all of the posts, you never get to do anything else with your life. Sometimes I see that certain people will post two or three times a day. I want to read other things, so I will pass them over if what they've written doesn't appeal to me. The other thing is that FS wants a large number of words for a review. If a person could get by with a few words, perhaps they would be more responsive, I don't know. Anyway, I understand your frustration gal.

I'll tell you something funny I learned the other day from an FS member. She didn't have 150 letters in her review, so at the end she had************* and it counted! I asked her about them and if she used them to take the place of words, and she did. Had to laugh. Smart cookie. I've used them once or twice, myself since then. ;) If you want to see something mind boggling, go to Debi Marquette's portfolio and just scroll down. Almost solid All Time Bests. She does neat poems on people's birthdays, and I guess "they" couldn't give All Time Best to a few, so ...

I haven't followed Debi, but I suppose I should. I know she has a heart for people. I hesitate on the one hand to start following too many more people, as there is only so much time in the day, and though I may be retired, I still have a life outside of FS, and I don't want to give it too much time.

I agree, I just meant to look at all the awards, etc. I was floored. But she does have a good heart and she is sick and now has covid, and is still writing birthday posts, so she deserves them.

thank you, ma'am! I try to review most that I read, too, except the ones with so many errors it's too daunting and to correct them all would probably not sit well with the author, not to mention the time it would take to do it. Thanks for your very nice comments and the good luck!!

Oh, Teri, I don't review all of them either, like you, for the same reasons, but I do try to review most of the ones I read. It's just so disappointing when you try your best and get 5 or 6 responses. I also know it depends on how high up the ladder I get with promoting, but that gets expensive when you're pressed for time and haven't been reviewing. Didn't mean to take people to task, just nudging a bit. Also I know people don't want to spend all day reviewing, either. Sorry if I appeared negative.

Katharine, I should have added a LOL to the 'take people to task' comment...I meant it tongue-in-cheek, as I am guilty of doing exactly that. And I think you are right, we all do it, but we should try to do a better job.

I'm not here to win, either, although It's nice the few times that I do. I just think, as you said when you pay to get to the top so you'll be read, or pay to get as far as you can, it hurts when you don't get but a handful of reviews. I went to writing conferences for years learning to write, and have been writing every day since, and would just like to be read. So, I thank you for reading!!!

I felt bad because after I wrote that, I did win. For some reason, my silly ones seem to do better than the serious ones which I strive to put my heart and soul into.

I try to vary, depending what is floating around in my mind at the time. Since I have so little there, the decision is usually easy to make.

Thanks, Dolly. I do the same, and I know If I can't get my post high enough up the ladder, fewer people will read it, AND I also know people don't want to spend their lives reviewing other people's posts. It was just wishful thinking. But thank you for reading and for your comments!

Yes, I've been amazed by the curiosity of people compared to the actual pens on paper response, when one promotes, they are still discrepancies between views and actual comments, I've ceased to worry now, but occasionally I get one that knows my writing but didn't comment before, oh well, why worry, beautifully written Katharine, great write and observation. Well, I guess I shouldn't, but it is disappointing. Kinda like making a speech to 3 or 4 people. One member said I was taking the members to task. I didn't mean to do that. Though I was trying for a slight nudge. :)

I've often pondered this very thought. A comment requires little effort, but it can provide the writer with so much assistance. Maybe even make him change to become a better writer. I truly believe most writers want honest criticism.
