Well, here I am late to the party. First, I certainly hope this is FICTION. But second, it really is excellent. It's everything flash should be: urgent, intriguing, and culminating with a big loud punch to the gut. Check, check and check! But, I repeat: this better be fiction!!

Hi Elle! You're always welcome of course! This is part fiction, part fact. My last meeting with a doctor involved the barrier of a desk and an infantile attempt to sketch his thoughts on a piece of paper when, as an adult, I could have understood his explanation in a handful of words (I've got a progressive neurological disorder affecting my balance and mobility). I also loathe receptionists! So it's never a delightful occasion for me. Hope you're well, Elle. Really miss you when you're not around. Thank you so much for the review, by the way. The entry disappeared into the mists of time but who cares! I'm hopeless with contests! xoxoxo

Wow, this is truly powerful... For such a tiny story it packs one heck of a wallop. It is quite easy to place oneself in the scene, hearing such frightening words... Well done indeed! Best of luck in the contest.

Thank you so much, Deborah! I really appreciate your thoughts here. I begin to wonder, sometimes, about whether doctors have any training on 'bedside manner' (barriers such as tables/desks etc) or is this a thing of the past? Debbie

Hmmm... good question.
You're very welcome.

well, Debbie, I must congratulate you for the wonderful accolades!
All Time Best! Terrific.
It's a good thing this is fiction, leaving the reader hanging, thinking, "What did she have?" Sort of Alfred Hitchcockish. :)
Good job.

Thank you so much, Katharine! I suppose it's part fiction/part fact but the last time I went to see a doctor, we were actually divided by a large desk and his approach wasn't the best:( As ever, I really appreciate your thoughts. Take care Debbie x

I know what you mean. I had one that was so rude, I left and never returned.
-
Mine started drawing childish, patronising pictures (hence the desk!) to explain something which even a 2 year old could understand in a few words!

sounds like a real jerk.
Comment from Wendy G
Well done! Sounds like a senttence of death to the person, and yet there is no compassion offered by the doctor - a social commentary on the lack of real care, and on his desire to quickly move to the next patient implying that his income matters mmore than the feelings the patient has to try to process. Best wishes for the contest.

This is a very interesting and well written Dribble Flash Fiction you have penned for the contest. You used very good descriptive words and very neat imagery from the artwork you chose. Best wishes in the contest. Teri

Sounds like my life in the last few months! This was a great piece of dribble flash fiction, telling us just enough to provoke an emotional reaction and causing us to ponder what events may transpire afterward.

In your few words I can envision the medical scene and sense the dread of what she will learn, the shock of knowing, and the indifference of the caregiver. I can well relate to the picture too. Funny how "positive" can be such a negative word.

Thank you so much, Elaine for your kind review and absolutely nailing my intention. I sometimes wonder if there's any teaching in med. school of 'bedside manner!' Apart from anything else, there should never be the barrier of a table/desk between doctor and patient. Thank you again for your time and thoughts. Debbie

This piece of work sadly rings true. The medical field in the US has become quite cold and methodical, especially with the entrance of giant corporations and government into the mix.
Hopefully the individual can still inject some humanity into the affair.

Thank you, Doug, for your kind review and understanding which I greatly appreciate! Sometimes, I think you get more compassion at the supermarket check-out! And barriers such as tables/desks between doctor and patient...well, insensitive to put it mildly! Thanks again. Debbie

Wow! Within the brevity of this challenge, you have managed to say a lot. You share imagery and an authentic expression of an experience we reader know in some familiar way.
Best wishes,
Alexandra

Medical facilities can be cruel. Sometimes you are a human, sometimes are you cattle being processed through. In some cases a diagnosis can be a relief to finally have answers, sometimes it's just more questions
