You immediately capture your reader with the opening line and continue with a very descriptive and imaginative story.
What carries it to a six-star is carrying the story to the unknown and leaving the reader wondering about his fate having him left in front of a deserted gate.

Are you trying to give your guests nightmares? This is an interesting story as the young man seems relieved to be losing his head. He certainly doesn't regret what he did. I actually rather hoped this was a "someone yells stop!" Rather anticlimactic to just get chopped.

Maybe the man was a minstrel who plied his way into the daughters bed with no intent to honor or respect the lady. In olden days, he would dance the night away bragging of his feat all the way until the scaffold door fell open. He disgraced the lady and queen again as he told the crowd of what he had done.

"Looking from a dungeon window, I see the light brighten a morning to mourn as this is the day this fellow dies." You mention an august child. I'm trying to figure out if this an allusion to something else or is an idiom: "I lost no sleep doing what I had done with an august child."

This is great fun and a very imaginative write. Love the French words you've scattered in there to give the piece a rather medieval feel. The humour and light-heartedness keep this from becoming morbid. The details of your head thumping into the basket just amuse rather than shock (or is that just my sick humour?) And your after-life is full of promise! So shall we say 'woe' mixed with hope (a perfect blend) Excellent, Tom! Good luck. A strong contender in my view. Debbie

You have a vivid imagination, and I hope it wins the contest. You can't become any more woeful than knowing the day you will die. Best wishes.

For some reason, I just don't believe that. Fine looking men with a gift of gab can always squeeze through the cracks. But smart fellas are lucky enough to find and choose the right one. LOL.
