This is well thought out, clearly expressed and beautifully done. I enjoyed your use of the same line for the end of each stanza. This provides a continuity of thought and meaning throughout the poem. Thank you for sharing. Diana

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia became controlled by tyrannical gangs until Putin came to power. He straightened things out, stabilized the country, and was reasonable to deal with on the international stage. However, now that he has become a long-term president, his reign has become increasingly tyrannical; and his determination to reabsorb Ukraine into Russia has become a long war because Ukrainians' taste of freedom made them unwilling to go back to subjective existence. Part of his reason for taking over Ukraine was to gain access to warm water ports, but he could have achieved that peacefully through reasonable diplomacy instead of force.

The result of his undeserved invasion of Ukraine is this war that is slowly destroying Ukraine's cities and industries, while killing more and more of the remaining resistant population. Consequently, you are entirely right throughout your poem and helpful Author Notes; and your refrain, "this war was waged because of greed," is the sad truth.

Whether he wins or loses, there won't be much left of Ukraine.

Your poem and notes clarify this situation better than most "news" media.

Superb, and aptly illustrated.

Mike, thank you so much for this very kind review and all your well-informed facts! I'm delighted it chimes with your thoughts. That means a huge amount to me. Hoping that you're keeping well, Debbie. PS Though Putin did his share at the time, I think Navalny was a big influence in straightening things out, hence his huge, albeit underground, following and the hold he still has on Putin?

You are most welcome, Debbie. As I said, you are right about all this. Yes, I am well, but very busy.

Yes, Russia would be better off if Putin had accepted Navalny as an advisory partner. Navalny has enough following that Putin cannot do any more than imprison him, lest a revolution might occur.

Your post has informed your readers well on this topic. :)) -- Mike

Marvelous expression in this, and your notes were very thorough and helpful. Putin is a dictator, for sure. Great repeating line. Even the Russian soldiers aren't too keen in being part of Putin's war. The Ukrainian people have held up admirably, considering what they've been through. I don't why the UN even exists, if they can't take action against Putin and his war crimes. Excellent job of crafting your poem. Several fine uses of alliteration with "force, fueled, fight" and "burn and bleed," etc. Great rhyme, too. judi

Thank you so much for this wonderful review and all your well-informed thoughts! I don't understand the point of the UN either. It seems to be absolutely caught in the headlights, no matter what hard evidence comes out of Ukraine. Thanks again, Judi, Debbie

You're welcome. Now we have this mess with Hamas attacking Israel. Things aren't looking good. I hope other nations will step up and help out. judi

Meanwhile the death and destruction keep going on, and there seems to be no stopping this madness. A country and it's people are being destroyed. A powerful poem debi, well written in both notes and verse.

This is beautifully written and very true. Putin wants Ukraine for its value in trade and treasures but mostly for his greedy desire to prove he can possess it.

powerful anti-war rant

like these lines the best

And still this murd'rous fight goes on
while Ukraine's heart will burn and bleed
until the treasured gem is gone -
this war was waged because of greed.

A well constructed and powerful poem. The notes provided are extensive and assist the reader with the background. Greed is the driving force and Putin inflicts murderous acts upon an innocent population. Tragic indeed. Well done.
Take care and have a wonderful day.

On top of the unjust Ukraine attacks, we now have the horrible attack on Israel. It is so disheartening. Today is the first day since the latest atrocity started that I have even felt like writing. The evil being perpetrated on innocent people is a terrible thing.

You have done a great service through your excellent poetry bringing more attention to the recent happenings. Many heavy hearts are lifting up deeply sincere prayers for the hateful actions to cease.

Thank you so much for this wonderful review and your encouraging thoughts. As other wars are waged, I think we must just keep these atrocities ever remembered in the public arena. Take care Debbie

Virtual six for this marvelous piece of journalism in poetry form. I received a lot of blow back on here when I first posted on the Ukraine War. It's amazing to me that it takes people so long to come around, on FS and everywhere. Some never will unless it's them.

Most don't realize if it happened to a sovereign nation like Ukraine, it can happen to any nation. Why don't we get that? Honestly, I do not understand how we let Putin past the annexation of Crimea in 2014. That was a test. You give a mouse a cookie, he'll want a glass of milk. And a big one.

The Bible says in the latter times that Rossia, or Rosh, Gog of the land of Magog, will attack Israel.

Ezekiel 38: 14 "Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog, 'Thus says the Lord God: "On that day when My people Israel dwell safely, will you not know it?
15 Then you will come from your place out of the far north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great company and a mighty army.
16 You will come up against My people Israel like a cloud, to cover the land. It will be in the latter days that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may know Me, when I am hallowed in you, O Gog, before their eyes."
17 Thus says the Lord God: "Are you he of whom I have spoken in former days by My servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied for years in those days that I would bring you against them?
18 "And it will come to pass at the same time, when Gog comes against the land of Israel," says the Lord God, "that My fury will show in My face.
19 For in My jealousy and in the fire of My wrath I have spoken: 'Surely in that day there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel,
20 so that the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all creeping things that creep on the earth, and all men who are on the face of the earth shall shake at My presence. The mountains shall be thrown down, the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.'
21 I will call for a sword against Gog throughout all My mountains," says the Lord God. "Every man's sword will be against his brother.
22 And I will bring him to judgment with pestilence and bloodshed; I will rain down on him, on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, flooding rain, great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.
23 Thus I will magnify Myself and sanctify Myself, and I will be known in the eyes of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the Lord."

With this yet to come, we need to pray and help Ukraine in any way we can.

Superb, my friend.
Sending you my best today as always,
Sal XOs

Thank you so much, Sally for your review, virtual six, well-informed thoughts and Biblical reference! We know that he will push and push for more and I do believe that, despite all the gloss that's been put on this evil act such as "geopolitical concerns" (my British friend still inexplicably supports him on this basis), that sheer insatiable greed underpins it all - greed for more power, greed for revenge against the West, greed for land, greed for wealth, greed for re-population of his own country, greed for legacy and status. I loathe him with a passion (as you might have guessed). Thanks so much, Sally! Debbie

This poem, The Ukraine War, speaks about Putin's greed and arrogance, but forgets how his timeline would have included Trump as the isolationist president not lending a hand to preserve Ukraine from the Russian assault. Let's make sure all the war criminals are gathered up.
