I was born in '54 and have lived through the transformation of doctors through these many years!
I partake in your medicinal practice (though slightly different), I do Bumbo rum instead of bourbon. It kills the bad crap coursing through me just fine.

I was born in the fifties, too. The first doctor I can remember was Dr. Flint. He was one of the old-time doctors who made house calls. I don't think there is such a thing anymore. Your story is nicely written and interesting. My husband died the same year as your Zoe, 2018.

Your acceptance of life and what it can throw at you makes you a very unique individual. Very pragmatic which can be seen in your last line. "She accepts Medicare patients." You brought you to life.

This is a great submission very good you're a fine writer. There's no doubt about thoughts of talent indeed, it's chromatically perfect. Gosh, but reading this feels like chatting with you (and sharing a generous slice of humor) across a table... I'll have coffee with a splash of half & half and one Sweet & Low.
It's true that as we age the list of ailments seems to increase exponentially--and also true that whenever I feel "bad" about my health I need only look around me and be thankful I don't have "that" challenge... or "that one." (I find myself in waiting rooms scanning the queue and giving myself a high five for not being...well. dead)
How well I remember there was seldom any representation beyond white males as doctors! Even as a young adult woman pursuing a choice of career, when I opined I might like "Medical School" a chorus of voices pushed back that "Women become Nurses!" (Oddly, it never occurred to me to push back... of COURSE, women had "their place" --I didn't realize until the Golden Years that "their place" is way higher than the fairy tale I'd been told!)
We've skipped from house calls to "telehealth" post-pandemic (as "post" as it's going to get I think)-- and I feel like I've won the lottery when I get a face-to-face visit with my doctor...or minimally her "Nurse Practioner."
I was moved that your GP reached out to you when Zoe died... It speaks volumes about the importance of having a solid relationship with one doctor -- and that has (sadly) become more and more difficult as doctor's names fall off the Medicare approval list.
(I look at each October issue of the Approved Medicare Doctors as though I was waiting to see if Taylor Swift tickets are available.)
I'm ranting, I guess. Long review short (much too late for that)--I applaud your ability to share your medical conditions and somehow make this an important commentary on the progress of medical opportunities for women, nationalities, religions, et al! --, and do so with a twinkle in your eye!
Stay healthy! We need you!
