Sometimes, a good rant can release our frustrations, like opening up a cage and letting the trapped birds fly free. The crowed pressures dissipated and a new outlook reborn. Thanks for sharing.

This is a nice rant. No one will ever catch me doing a selfie. I want to destroy cell phone when I see myself it one. They are the most unflattering things I've ever seen. My own kids take them all the time but like you say, they probably never look at them over once unless they load them on to media site. I agree with what you've written here.

Flibbertigibbets? LOL! Better Google that one.

I hate cell phones and the constant need to look at it to see if anyone "LIKES" the last selfie we put up. Not so much? Better take a new one!

No wonder people are so unhappy - is this all there is? Constantly looking at ourselves instead of the world around us?

I'm right there with you on this rant. Wish you luck in the contest.

Zanya, you are soooo right. Not only are there selfies, there are websites that can enhance your selfies by making you look younger, with smoother skin or an even skin tone. People take selfies because they are in love with themselves. How about the selfie stick? You slip your phone in a slot on a stick and you can hold your arm out, placing the phone father away for a fuller, longer view of yourself. It's impossible to love your neighbor as much as some people love looking at themselves. Great rant. Best wishes in the contest.

What a great rant! And you taught me some things I never even considered - the selfie in the clothing shop. Lol!
And you taught me a new word - flibbertigibbets!
I do enjoy group selfies which documents a gathering but you're right about the narcissism in the other situations! Best wishes in the contest!

I agree. When did people become so enamored of themselves to indulge in such a silly hobby. As long as it doesn't directly affect me, I can live with their vanity. Like all other crazes, this, too, will pass. Hopefully.

I thought this was an informative rant. I did not realize the term was already over two decades old. But my home state has a tendency to run two to ten years behind trends in the nation. I keep thinking that photography took a long time in the nineteenth century, and it had to be carefully posed and usually included formal dress. "Narcissistic" is a good way to describe quite a lot of these selfies, which you already included. The other term that comes to mind is 'fatuous.' It is also a good reminder not to force 'our pals' eyes' to 'generally glaze over' because we think for some odd reason our photographs might be better than theirs. Sorry I am out of sixes, but it was well-written.

My two daughters are well into selfies and always have their cameras out taking pictures. I am getting used to it and have taken a few myself Zanya. It used to be thought of as self indulgent to take pictures of oneself and promote oneself, but these days it is popular, a fine post, much enjoyed, love Dolly x x x

A rant worth making Zanya! I do not have a very smart phone - in fact it's so dumb it can't do selfies - at all - ever! Am I sad ? Am I frustrated? Do I feel deprived? (Just give me a minute while I finish laughing.)

Selfies are a curse! and so are the morons who take them! I would allow a shot with a famous person - that's more like a visual autograph - but of myself again and again and again and . . . . Give me a break! The last time I was worth photographing was forty years ago. (I have ONE handsome photo to keep FOR EVER!) Since then, all my passport photographs would scare the birds or turn the unwary to stone.

And your final point is so well made - all these selfies are a colossal waste of time! Get a life everyone. Do something new - have a conversation!

Best wishes, Paul

Excellently said and all very relatable! As soon as you mentioned pouting women, you really fired me up. They look so ridiculous, at least they could do it in the privacy of their own homes. I've never been into selfies not least because the angle makes me look 100 years old and related to the Munster family! But this tedious need to see the world through a camera lens drives me insane and, as you rightly say, the pictures are promptly forgotten or discarded because the effort of putting them into an album or frame could be better utilised taking more useless pictures! I could go on but won't. In the 3rd para there's a bit of a hiccup "what maybe what they ate?" But this is a superb rant and strong entry. Good luck! Debbie
