Of course names are important as they establish who is important in the family and who is not. Crouching tiger, Hidden dragon explains this dynamic quite succinctly.
It is always about the ranking of the person who picked and named a child new into the family. The hierarchy is meaningful.

I know two men named Kim with an i. I don't know if it bothers them. They've never said. I have a difficult name and have been called every variation under the sun. I answer anything that sounds remotely right.

lol That's funny because it's so exaggerated, "walk the line." It's funny how we view our identities, early in life, and move with who we are, through experiences.
Only we know those little, underlying dramas, those crosses we each must bare. I had a similar situation because I was the youngest child and youngest girl. My parents had two of each, girl, boy, boy, girl, so the four grandparents' names fit well. I was second of identical twins, at the end, so I, a girl, was named after my dad.
The way I "handled" it was to steer a certain nickname by reacting to it. My dad was Alex, so I quietly rejected that. I only reacted to a name my mom, mercifully, started, "Alexan." Yep. If ya wanted to address, me, you would st, "Alexan." Extended family caught on as well. Once, an old cousin had a child he named after me, and they call her "Alexan," too. Another cousin had a child had a daughter named Alexandra and they called her Alexan, too. Alexan was securely 'a thing.' It became endearing. When a friend would say Alex, I would cringe thinking, "surely they did not get the memo." lol
Then, in 2019, my dad passed, I'm his 100th year and, for some reason, after he passed, I don't mind if strangers call me Alex. I view it as an honor now, it's like lifting my dads Spirit. It's different now.
So, maybe it's not a name that needs to change, it's our own confidence in ourselves.
