Why are so many artists drug users and alcoholics?
I imagine it to be because in a way writing or whatever your art is gives you a sort of high.
It takes you away from the rent, screaming kids, and whatnot of boring everyday life. Make your life what you want it to be. Do not wait around for something to happen. Let your art be your joy, not your escape.
My own small opinion. Karen

Thank you for this review. There really is a trend with all the poets, pop stars, actors etc I've written about that the following factors seem to be in their background: alcohol/drug abuse; domestic/child abuse; madness. It all seems to go with the territory and in the end brings them down although the interim period can be quite stunningly magnificent. The rest of us seem to float along in a sea of mediocrity:)) But happy! Debbie

I enjoyed this poetic tribute to Dylan Thomas. The author notes were extremely helpful and helped round it out. No wonder he gets poetry contest categories named after him every so often, even in the United States. Good job.

Debbie, this is an amazing poem, about an author who met his death far to early, and mainly to neglect. What a sad state of affairs. I can understand why it was elected for the competition. Sadly I'm out of sixes. Ulla xx

I love your definition of alcoholic, 'someone you don't like who drinks as much as you.'
Where can I discover more about this poet? Is his name Michael Sheen? I'd love to learn more?

Bob, thank you so much for this kind review! The poet is actually Dylan Thomas, a Welsh poet from my home city of Swansea who crossed the pond and made quite an impact in the US on various reading tours. Definitely worth a read if you have time. Debbie

This is such a beautiful poem to commemorate an author, gifted beyond even his own comprehension. It's obvious he was a lover of words. "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" makes me catch my breath every time I read it.

This is a wonderful contest entry that I hope does well.

The timbre is impressive. As I read it aloud, a rhythm naturally appeared, which was enjoyable.
It was like a silk ribbon floating down the page, effortlessly.

The rhymes work well without force, and have a smooth flow.

Good luck!

Dylan Thomas poems generally talk about his childhood and innocence and how the knowledge of death puts a stop to the state ...The poem I remember most is Fern Hill .
This is a very good poetic portrait of a brilliant soul who also dealt with facing death bravely

thank you for sharing..
