I hate them, too. They are the lowest of the low, and need to be locked away forever. The trouble is, they can't be traced. I came very close at losing everything once, but my granddaughter was here and she saw what was happening. I hang up now when I get iffy phone calls. Horrible slimeballs! I hope enough people read this, Brett, so they can won't be conned. Well done. :) Sandra .

This is really interesting as I am bother by them every day. Like yesterday I got three calls in a row yo congratulate me on winning a free cruise and education grants I did' t have to pay back and for me to get burial plots, go figure. The start around dinner time and right up till bedtime. It's impossible to complain no one care enough to stop this.

I agree; I hate scammers. I almost fell for a scam similar to the one you describe. Mine was a problem with Microsoft and that was fixed but a goverment organization saw my bank info and were investigating my bank and needed me to transfer some money. After 2 and a half hours I almost fell for it because it began to sound possible. Fortunately, my husband figured out they couldn't have gotten my bank's name from my computer because it isn't on there. I am so glad you wrote this, and you might add that there are a lot of reasonable sounding paramutations of the scam you describe.

Scammers, and there are so many of them out there peddling their schemes, that unless you know precisely who you are dealing with always best to not communicate with them in any way. Appreciate your comments and the review.

Interesting article and worth the read. They prey on older people because they make themselves look so legitimate and we tend to be more trusting than we should be, and less informed, so more easily tricked. Scammers have no scruples. They consider their work simply as "a business like any other".

My late mother in law fell victim. They managed to get two grand before she figured it out. They posed as a college friend of her son. It's scary. She had a sizable account. But they were squeezing her a little at a time. There is a special place in hell for scammers and hackers. Great essay. Gretchen

Fascinating and informative. I have to say I don't even understand what cryptocurrency and bitcoin are. But this is well written. More than hating scammers I don't understand how people can be so horrible as to prey on others like this.

I nearly fell for for, they tempt you via a method that they say is infallible, which is multiplying your money exponentially, however I checked out their fake name and discovered that they don't actually exist, fortunately i twigged to them, beautifully written Brett, I guess it's the greed that lies within us we find attractive, they are becoming more devious, I wouldn't want to be in their shoes when justice is fulfilled, beautifully written, blessings Roy

Well, I've never understood crypto currency and I don't think I ever will. It doesn't interest me, I've always seen is as fake. I believe in money you can hold and put into your account of real money.

The rise in crime targeting postal carriers and mailboxes heightens the risk that mailed checks could be stolen, as has been documented in incidents across the nation. For instance, a rash of thefts from blue collection boxes in Milwaukee led to the break up last month of a criminal ring. The suspects allegedly used stolen "arrow keys," or a universal USPS key that opens mail collection boxes, to pilfer mail, including more than 900 stolen checks, according to a criminal complaint.
The theft issues have prompted the USPS to advise that Americans avoid depositing mail in blue collection boxes or leaving it in their own mailboxes for a carrier to pick up. Instead, the agency is now recommending that patrons come inside their local post office to securely send mail.
I had eight different pieces of mail stolen from the blue collection boxes, seven had checks in them, one was a birthday card. Not all at once, but over a couple weeks before I knew the first ones had been stolen. I contacted my bank and the USPS postmaster general. Of course, I will never retrieve my missing checks, but at least they say they trying to attempt stop it. My husband is positive it's the government's attempt to force use cryptocurrency. I'm not ready to go that far, yet.
