I think Rush is was an apt name for the one who lost his life with the underwater vessel. Anyone who chooses to put their life in danger with those kind of risks involved is apparently addicted to the feel of the rush you get when knowing you are in taking a chance with your life. It is the same with someone who plays Russian Roulette. I think they must understand it could be a death sentence and it's hard to find a lot of sympathy for them.
However when we undergo any kind of medical procedure we are expected to sign just such a waver. Hopefully the risk is that great aner we might not have another alternative.

That was a very informative read. Unfortunately I think the owner was totally irresponsible and foolishly over-confident for not taking advice to get the safety checks done. He has paid for it with his life, but unfortunately four others paid for their folly in trusting him without doing their own checks as to the credentials by losing their lives also. Sad story.
Well written. Wendy

Sounded to me like his main interest was how much money he could make whether dives were safe or not. Hard to have sympathy for a person like that. Appreciate your comments and the review.

The whole thing could have been avoided. I cannot imagine how people could entertain the idea of going 15000 feet below the surface of the ocean. It just seems to be tempting fate. I'm sure that's what people said about air planes in the beginning. This shows the need for regulations and testing. Great piece. Gretchen

You have made some excellent points here. No doubt they did sign waivers. Rush's statement about not passing safety standards sound like the words of an idiot. I should hope no one will sign up for those later trips if they have created another Titan. A couple of suggestions: Change to more accurate word . . . have drawn (attention) to how . . . . . . submersible (implosion)--- which would not sound like explosion but more like crushing aluminum into a ball.

Your post was well-researched and informative, Brett.
I don't understand the draw Titan had when one can
see the Titanic on the bottom on the ocean floor on
numerous YouTube videos. The CEO in charge was full
of it. Those who signed up for a trip were throwing good
money after bad even though it was their choice. It's tragic
this event led to 5 deaths. Why would anyone want to go
before or after? The CEO claimed it was to research. However,
the submersible had no way of retrieving anything etc. It was
an accident waiting to happen.
Thanks for haring, Jan

Hi Brett, You raise many valid questions, and the answers are certainly out there, but we're not told just yet. There are subs that can can go down to those depths, no problem. But they are operated by various countries' governments, America included. Now, I have a very personal angle to the Titanic and its discovery. I may write about one of these days. Ulla:)))

A fascinating piece of journalism. Very well researched and very well written. Two further points are the obscene amounts of money spent on the rescue while hundreds of migrants died in the Med, virtually unnoticed, and the comparisons I read director James Cameron making with the Titanic itself. Two ships that were destroyed by human arrogance for the pursuit of money.

Isn't that a fascinating story Brett? The fact that the submersible went down and the assumptions of what might have have happened were still full of hope, and no presumptions were made of its demise at that time, but pressures at those depths are "crushing". Well done Brett, blessings Roy

An exceptional and impressively researched story here. Thank you for giving the reader so much information in such a thorough commentary. There is nothing about this I would change. Its argument against this whole ill-fated voyage is utterly compelling. Well done! Debbie
