Okay, having lived in a nearly all Jewish neighborhood, I understand. Of forty some families all were jews save for 1.5 familes. One French Catholic woman married a jewish fellow. We were the other lost sheep.
What is often lost in religious talks is that Jesus was a Jew.

Just sayin', but going to mass isn't my idea of a rollicking reunion. I'm wondering if your husband attended Catholic school?
In any case, I love your counter-blessing. Like you, I'm very tolerant of all religious ideology. But that doesn't mean I don't notice when less sensitive people show no interest in my comfort level while foisting religion 'unto' me. You handled yourself with both grace and dignity.

Best of luck with the Committee.

Peace, Lee

lol. He DID attend Catholic for a couple years in grade school. But the going-to-Mass outing was only PART of the whole Reunion Weekend. The previous night, they'd had a barbeque at the local park, then, on Saturday morning, there had been a tour of the school, followed by a Happy Hour that afternoon at a town tavern. Mass was, no doubt, to atone for that...and then the extra dose of penance with the group blessing over the meal.

Thanks for the validation for my counter-blessing. And thanks for the additional star, too. Very much appreciated.

A poignant write and I loved the last line as forgiveness helps us heal ourselves too. Some people make jokes at our expense and we must never take them personally, I enjoyed your words here, love Dolly x

So true. As Christians the Bible tells us that we shouldn't make a big scene when we pray. I guess Lenny missed that scripture. Jesus was also a Jew, so there's that too. Christians often shoot themselves in the foot. Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us and good luck.

Clever writing. Thank you for giving us this insight into your faith, subtly expressing this through narrative and authentic dialogue and description. Most engaging.

I'm not sure of the validity of your 'blessing', but I am sure of the verity of your actions. Well done.
And nicely written.
Good luck in the contest.

Well, I did say "amen" at the end, so that helped it to qualify as a blessing...

Anyway, thank you for your fun review.

Amen, Sister, and a very well-told story in the fast lane of religion. I am reminded of the song by Kinky Friedman, "They Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore." Good luck in the contest. Terry.

HAHAHAHA!! How in the world did I miss THAT gem of a song?!! Now you've piqued my curiosity! Thanks for the validating review.

Okay; I finally remembered to listen to it. O. M. G. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Thank you so very much for that gift.

Kinky is one of our great Texans. He ran for Governor in 2006, his slogan was, "How hard can it be?"

Noooo! My gawd, that is hilarious!! (I have to ask: did you vote for him?

Yes I did. He also had some tequila, and I had an autographed bottle, plus one of his posters from the campaign was also signed. Terry.

My dear friend: Shalom, Shalom.
I wish I knew your name. I am Paul, living in North London, with a host of close Jewish friends, having taught in a number of Jewish schools, and remain an Anglican minister, since 45 years ago. So I would have fitted right in with your reunion. I'm sorry I missed it!
Most of us who love people also respect their religion or faith - my friends look like the League of Nations, with every conceivable faith included; how could I possibly NOT like your article?
Your over-zealous and rather insensitive friend might remember that all his short adult life, Jesus was a Jewish Rabbi, his first followers were all Jewish (with few exceptions) and the earliest church was founded in Jerusalem. When I am asked to say grace in 'mixed company', I only refer to 'The Lord', which is both generic and respectful to all faiths.
So, your response was priceless! Jesus would not have been impressed with Lenny, but he would have given you a big smile!
Paul

Now, THIS is a wonderful review, and I can't thank you for it enough. I was quite reticent when I hit the "Send" button on it this morning. But you've made me feel it wasn't such a bad decision after all.

I am a Christian. I not only have had Jewish friends, but I have one friend from my College Class of '73 who is, like you, in a Jewish/Christian (Catholic) home. He is the "Christian" one. I often wondered what thoughts have been going through his wife's mind. Thanks to you, I now know!

Thank you for sharing this essay. It is well-written and I agree with your words: "Because Jesus was all about humility and understatement and inclusion...never EVER about grandstanding or making a sanctimonious spectacle of spirituality,"
