Thank you for sharing your story with us. I like how you start by asking questions. It mimics what I would expect from a child as they begin to explore their world. Not that level of questions, just the act of asking question after question after question. I love how you are able to bring the images into my mind through your word choices.

Yes, you were both chosen and blessed. Good things do happen in this world. Love is alive and well.
note:
Today, I believe a child that young would be aware of something fundamental being amiss when growing up in an orphanage. The same child would also be deprived of what only a pair of loving parents would be able to provide.
-Isn't it more likely that child would only know, if they had a frame of reference to compare?

What a powerful testimony, Ulla!! First of all, your life story must have had many challenges, and you recount it with much tenderness and nostalgia. Secondly, you write beautifully, and the reader never gets bored.
I love your style.
*** BTW, I VOTED FOR YOU JUST NOW

As an adopted person myself, I identified with your story, although I was lucky to be adopted as a baby. You describe your memories well - the boots and Bammy being very symbolic of love and connection.
How intriguing to find you were half American.
I felt I was lucky and had 'hit the jackpot' with my adoptive parents, as you did.

Ulla,
Yours is a beautiful and unforgettable true story.
I read a book, entitled, "The Family Nobody Wanted," a true story about a couple who wants children, and they end up adopting several. It has sad and funny moments; I just thought you would like it because it's about adoption.
Good luck with your exceptional story.

This tugs at the heart-strings. How wonderful to be chosen and become part of a loving family. You set it up well with all the things you didn't realize you didn't have until those boots came into your life. The first thing that was truly a possession to call your own. I'm glad you've kept them of a symbol of belonging and being cherished.

A heart warming story. I have no memories from that age so I'd say you are lucky. You were chosen.
Beautiful words which reflect your character and understanding of the intention of your adoptive parents l.
Thank you for sharing,
Jacqueline

Comment from Bill Schott
This story, One of Not So Many, is a great example of this premise. Indeed, you were chosen, and your understanding of the event seems appropriate to what a child would be told. I especially see the importance of a first gift of shoes, and a first cuddly friend.
First sentence in third paragraph: ...of all this, how could I have done?
Thisn sentence has a 'comma splice, which connects two sentences. I would swap out the comma and use a semicolon, since you begin with a statement and end with a question. Also, lose "done" at the end, as it doesn't fit at all.
(...of all this; how could I have?)

Thank you so much, Bill. I have taken your advice and edited it. You're right, it reads better that way. I will never forget those boots. It was the first time someone had ever given me a gift. This is not something being told to me. It's something I remember. You better believe it. Ulla:)))

So, now get to discover a mite about your adoption history. Very interesting what you have detailed here. Glad you found your family members. As I wrote in Unwanted Dog no one has ever come forward to claim kinship with me, and truth be told, do not miss what I never had. Good luck in this contest.

Thank you so much, Brett. Truth be told, I only looked up my parents for the fun of it, not realising what a huge impact it would have on me.
Also, by law, your real parents are prevented to look you up, once you're adopted. It's meant to protect you and your adoptive parents. Once your real parents have given you up, that's it.
Thanks so much again. Ulla:)))
