Hurts To Say Goodbye

I like this poem because it is hopeful. It offers another way of looking at grief and our process of mourning. Sometimes, we get a different perspective when we ask the right question. "How can the deceased find release if we refuse to let them go?" We gently tell our loved ones it is okay for them to go and be in peace, but then we refuse to let them go for our peace.

Lots of poems on the site today on this subject of losing someone near and dear to you. Your poem speaks about hope, the hope of the resurrection and the hope that we will one day see our fathers and mothers again. I like the way you articulate this from your grandmother. It's the words of family members in their personal tone that reach us with the most impact. They remind us of our faith and things we all believed in as family together. estory

Wow, this poem!!! A grandmother giving council -- such words of wisdom would be of great comfort/are of great comfort to me. Indeed, "How can the deceased find release if we refuse to let them go?"
(I might suggest having the rest that follows in quotation marks too, as the grandmother's speech.)
How wonderful! Thank you for sharing this marvelous poem.

This poem resonated with me because I've lost so many people in my life. I too, mourned for longer then I should have, but luckily, my family understood. I'm sure many can relate.

Thank you. There is a reason I titled this piece 'Hurts to say goodbye' it is not easy to let go of someone you love and treasure. It is equally difficult to let go of someone who is still alive who is leaving or has already left you.

This free verse poem plunges all of us who have recently lost someone close to analyse the process of our grief. It is good because it draws us away from sorrow, teaching that we should turn elsewhere. kay

Thank you for your thoughts very well expressed.

So very true. It's good to grief and it's a natural reaction, when someone you loved has passed away. But it's equally natural to start to move on after a certain time. I liked your poem. Ulla:)))

Good work.
Within the FanStory community, I guess you absolutely 'must' state in Author's Notes when something is not biographical, or is fiction.
'...remain alive, In the memory...' - lower case (i)
Best wishes.

There is no great promise that that, if one has met the creator of the universe, "I will never leave you nor forsake you," Hebrews 13:5, these promises are repeated throughout the Bible. What a wise and beautiful poem, superbly written, well done, blessings Roy

This poem has some great advice, Nolan. I think the true believers handle death much better than those who believe that their destiny is a six foot hole.

The pit can be a stopping off, dropping off place, but it is not the end. Remember that even Jesus was burried. That was not his end, nor does it have to be ours.

That is very insightful. We hold onto the promise of resurrection. The person who has died has been set free from earth's ties, but those who mourn are perhaps grieving what they have lost - love, companionship etc, and need to allow that grief to happen but also not be so obsessed or focussed on loss that they can no longer function in their own life. One must keep an "eternal" perspective, if possible. Beautifully written, and I thank you for sharing.
