Teen angst...and the dreams we held! You've yet again captured this strange time when our "new" attraction turned from objects to THE object of our affection...and (so often)--the parental units didn't quite see it our way! You have "Barbara Jean... I have a young lad named "Harry" -- to this day I wonder how life would have turned out if only!

I am sorry that you didn't get a chance to know Barbara Jean. It might've been an interesting summer for you and for her and it happened. I wish you the very best in life. Patricia

Never judge a man by his car, even if it is a shiny Chevy. She will never know what she may have missed, but then again, maybe you were spared some heartache. I like the somewhat youthful innocent voice of this piece. It gives it authenticity and is very likeable.

Lol. Oh dear. But it's a pity he judged you on the bais of your car, which probably only needed a new battery. Barbara Jean will never know what she missed out on! I think it's very well written, loved the bit about his frown almost touching the ground!

Wendy, as a dad of two young ladies, I understand fully this Papa bear stance, although at the time it did sting the ego.

Hi JLR,
I think your Chevy probably saved you a lot of heartache that day. I am sure you sorted the Chev's mechanical faults and sought after another pretty girl at the hospital lol. Volunteering right! ha ha.
I will look forward to reading you next post for this theme love and marriage over the next few days.
Still smiling
Cheers Chris

I think most of us would have stories like this one where life as we planned didn't quite work, of course this bloke was only protecting his dear daughter, as I would have, heh heh. Beautifully written Jim, blessings Roy
Typo : love and (marraige) marriage? 2; (at) drove across) we?
3: and quick (as) lark 4: (To) key to start. The?

I enjoyed the tinges of rhyming in this free verse poem. And the subject, well that was stellar. The caricature of a typical overprotective father, just anxious to get the unsuitable suitor off his property. kay

Lol. That's a funny story! Oh dear. To be judged just by the car is so terrible. I guess that's better than the father coming along and giving you both a ride!

I can believe every word written. Love spurned because of parental
Differences
I think I have been there but it was long ago and though it took a while to leave go, I did and my life was blessed to the nth degree.

This was real, and it made me smile. I think you're right - Barbara Jean missed out. (Suggestions: (I or I was, instead of me) a senior and 2nd to last stanza (I've, instead of I) seldom seen.
