Yes, bureaucracy is terrible at offering anything worth having for the sick and dying since they make people go through hoops to apply for anything worth having when dying of cancer or other diseases that need palliative care.
I know I have been there!

Yes. You would be in a position to understand very well. Thanks so much for the review. Wendy

Isn't that the purpose of government, to confuse and upset the residents of which they were sworn in to serve. Crazy that their paychecks come
from the publicans.

Very true. Just so little understanding of what some people are going through.

I feel for this family and what they're going through as far as the permit for the handicap parking. When I had pancreatitis a number of years ago, I was given a permit that was going to be to my advantage for six years. When I receive the permit, I told the department that once I got to where I did not need the closer parking anymore I would give her permit back. After about nine months, I was able to walk into the Department and give them back the permit. They looked at me like I had two heads.

Yes, I am sure - because they are so used to people keeping them unnecessarily and thereby denying a space to those who need one. I think they just like to wield their "power" sometimes. I am sure a compassionate person could have looked into how to over-ride the system for such circumstances as these, on the very first day. Thank you for your thoughtful and caring review.

This one hits the stupidity of bureaucracy hard where it should hurt but probably won't. Why because bureaucracy lives by the rules - that is its nature. Bureaucracy would not be bureaucracy without the rules.
But, and this has to be said, it is necessary because without it the selfish ones would abuse the system and (perish the thought) break the rules.
Reading this made me angry so it must have been very well written.

You are right. Some people do abuse the system, and checks need to be in place. But I think some people just like to wield their "power" sometimes. I am sure a compassionate person could have looked into how to over-ride the system for such circumstances as these, on the very first day. I am sure it is not an isolated incident. I appreciate your review very much.

Absolutely ludicrous. The Service Center should be embarrassed and humiliated over a situation like this. But they won't. Rules are in place for a reason, but common sense has to a part of the mix.
Bottom line, they received the handicap placard which will accommodate Kay and also assist the mother!
Great story, Wendy. Thanks for sharing.

I am so sorry that this has happened to your friend. Dealing with authorities when someone is really ill and needing support is so unhelpful. When my husband died the phone company refused to cancel his contract in his name saying that my dead husband had to continue to pay the payments until the end of the contract. I explained that my husband could no longer pay because he was deceased! This made no difference.
I eventually wrote a very strong letter the CO, all in Spanish telling them how disgusted I was by their service and I listed a number of English words that Sherlock Holmes would have used! They wrote back full of apologies and they listed all the words I had used saying they were guilty as charged and cancelled by husband's phone contract. This is an example of stupid bureaucracy.
I am glad your friend can now park and take her daughter to the hospital without fear of being fined.
A poignant post Wendy, love Dolly x

Thank you Dolly. Great review. Exactly the same thing happened to my mother in law when her husband died. They would not listen to reason so eventually my husband rang the CEO of the telecommunications company. It was quickly corrected.

If this article isn't enough to piss someone off, I don't know what is. This is probably one of the reasons that these departments are the targets of protests - violent or otherwise.

I'm glad she got it. But it does seem like the right hand is unaware of what the left is doing sometimes. In the states we have to battle the federal government and the state government. North Carolina is usually the one state that has extra hoops or firmer no's. It's too easy sometimes to have an official say my hands are tied. The case you posted was a calamity of errors and injustices. Good luck to Kay and her mother. Gretchen

Thank you for such a thoughtful and kind review. I am sure they could have helped her on the first day her mother went if they had been prepared to take the time to find out how to over-ride the flawed system. I appreciate your kind words.

This should be essential reading for all bureaucrats! The situation is similar in UK where nurses don't all get free parking at their place of work!! It seems as if making people who are very ill jump through as many hoops as possible is 'fun' for some people! Well said!

Thank you Sarah! I do appreciate your words very much, as well as the six stars. I think they have a sadistic streak in knowing they have that power. I appreciate your supportive review.
