This verse about life going on after loss is very sensitively and poignantly expressed. The analogy to the actor and the theatre illustrates feelings of detachment and role-playing that satisfy people (the audience) around you but don't in the end address the deep-rooted emotions (use of anti-depressants - another mask - instead). Well done on such a lovely, thoughtful poem which fits the brief perfectly. Thanks for sharing, Debbie

Sandy,

This is another brilliant write and a perfect entry in the Sad Poems writing contest. I've admired your skillful writing from afar and often wondered if you have a special secret to consistently receiving 6 star reviews. I'm very impressed with your talent and your creativity in each of your writes. You have been blessed with a gift for word play and I'm guessing your are often surprised by your deserving reviews.

All the best,

Eugene

    Sandy,

I just won the lonely poem contest. That's my second win this year. You may have noted I've started posting short stories this year. I think I have an entry in all of the free contest save 4. I plan to create a number of poetry and short story contests. In the past 2 months I've written 30+ poems and 20+ short stories waiting to post.

Did you enter the poem the National Poetry Writing Month. I missed entering the Ist contest starting April 1st. But will start this week posting entries for the 2nd National Poetry Writing Month contest which started last week. I look forward to reading and reviewing more of your masterpieces when posted.

    All the best,

    Eugene

Sandra,
Your poem hits home for me, as I suffer from depression. I have also been traumatized by loss of love and love ones.
I can relate very well to its words. The graphics are somber as is are your heartfelt words.
Good luck with this one, Sandra.
Blessings,
Cindy

Cindy, thank you for your supportive exceptional rated review. I too suffer from depression. It only received one vote and that was from me.
    Blessings,
    Sandra

We sometimes put on a show for the world and keep our sorrow and anguish inside us and not display it for the world to see. The British are past masters at this as showing public grief is often frowned upon. Your poem is heartfelt and poignant and a great post for the contest, love Dolly x

How I wish I had a six star review remaining. This is a brilliant piece of writing. Everything is a standout, the words, their expressed meaning, the theme- carried through in the presentation. Such melancholy truths.

I like your free verse- good picture presentation of the stage of life- where we are all actors on it's stage- sometimes reading the appropriate lines for the audience, sometimes going off script- bored by its repatriation - ratings be damned- sometimes worth the consequence- sometimes not- reality of life's journey- then back to what works- the cheerfully compelling smile- good message - insight and flow- nice job AP

Mournful but not melodramatically so. Sad, as the prompt specifies, but not disingenuous. It perfectly depicts the practiced, knee-jerk responses by people who've learned (no doubt the hard way) that too many in this world prefer you offer up a fake smile than honest tears.

Well done, Mystery Contestant.

This poem so well describes the part we have to play at times with those who only know us superficially. There's no way to express the depth of grieving and one must just play the expected role. Best wishes in the contest!

So very sad - but your post expressed perfectly the mask people wear, especially lonely elderly people. Also the shallowness of others who do not choose to see the pain behind the words of false cheer. Best wishes for your thoughtful entry.

It is a sad fact of life that others prefer not to see the sadness we feel. Because of this we feel compelled to put on our masks. The show must go on. Off stage, we wait for healing. You have dealt with a sensitive topic in a caring way. Well done.
