This is most definitely sad and melancholy yet I love the descriptions of the heather and the mermaid you might turn into with the shiny tail. I love how you bring us into your world of worry about whether you will be remembered or not. I am happy this is not autobiographical since I have come to welcome your poetry and prose.

I like this sad poem. My favourite part was, "Maybe like a rock I will roll down the cliff/ and the silver water will welcome me./ Then I'll be a mermaid with a shiny tail." I also like how you contrast that happy fantasy with the more likely outcome of being swallowed by the river. The end lines are a bit odd. I'm trying to decide if they're in a column like they're rolling single file down the hill, or if they're the plummeting dive into the river. It caught me attention, even if I'm totally wrong.

I felt like this was written from the point of view of a tree overlooking the heather meadows. It is always good to commune with nature when one is feeling down. Although one may not become a mermaid, one can feel the comfort of the life all around us. Best wishes in the contest!

Rather than call it sad poetry, I would rather call it reflective writing. My wife calls me a broody, moody Welshman, (mind you I'm only half Welsh, my other half is Anglo Saxon.) I was a heavy drinker once, like Dylan Thomas, but I stopped, he didn't, so I've lived longer, Shelley was only 28 when he died, Thomas 37. Boy they were young. This is beautifully and serenely written Maria, blessings Roy
