The ending is so very sad. You have me hoping the character in question is merely contemplating alternatives and does not go down to the river below. Sadness passes and the best may be yet to come. Still, we all have those times we contemplate what if things were different.

The form you have chosen is conversational and puts in the head of the character. The formatting of the last four lines is very effective in enhancing the theme and the hopeless descent.
