Paul, this is a very good poem for the contest. The rhymes are good and the humor, what kind of grandpa is going to help anyone with math these days, and the juxtaposition with the sadness of Viet Nam are well done. Excellent writing. Terry.

Thanks, Terry. It is hard to help kids today. They have almost everything they need on the internet.

Oh my goodness, Paul,
What a beautiful and moving poetic offering.
Really pulls at my heartstrings for a number of reasons: the closeness of the grandson to the grandfather, the fact that the father is too busy, and the topics the little grandson needs to learn. But most of all, the ending... This one is a keeper, Paul!

Thank you for sharing!
Best Wishes!

The voice of a child, so trusting and honest. This poem touches my heart as it is a grandson-grandfather relationship. A wise young man who knows when to ask for help and when to change the subject. Beautiful!

Thanks, Kerry. My grandfather was a WWI vet, and I have spent many evenings with him for help in math.

Paul,
This is the second read I did so far this morning and I'm batting a thousand!

I read it in the voice of my grandson which as you'd know, gave it a true life's feel.

Well written, good flow and rhymes. Thank you for posting this piece. Say hi to Gram!

You made me smile with this sweet natured write Paul, helping kids with homework these days is a trial, but I expect we have a lot to reach the youngsters.

Fought and shot don't rhyme in English, but I expect with your heavy American accept the match perfectly!

Much enjoyed, love Dolly x

A wonderful poem Paul. Realistic, authentic and it sounds like a real slice of everyday life, with all the real conversations between a grandson and grandfather. It flows and rhymes very well. Sending best wishes for the rhyming poem contest.

A good grandfather is a blessing. I never knew mine on either side. My adoptive parents met in Australia and mom's father was an ANZAC. That's all I know

Aw that was really sweet at the end. The beginning, I was thinking, I hope my grandchildren don't come asking me about their math problems. I'd not heard of many of those!! Goodness me, I'd fail my exams now. This was a wonderful rhyming poem, fun and the rhythm is spot on. Good luck! :)) Sandra xx

Thanks, Sandra. I'm a retired math teacher, but I don't know how I would do with the new math.

An extraordinary poem written from the heart. It's funny you should mention Walt Whitman as I just ordered his "Leaves of Grass", online last night.

The meter is spot on and the inclusion of so many topics is commendable. Best of luck. J
