This is fascinating. My great grandmom was full blooded Algonquin and I treasure the fact I have Native American heritage...

Nancy Ward was a fierce woman of wisdom and courage!

There is so much more to history that we are not routinely taught.

Thanks for sharing!

I found her story interesting and was doubly shocked that her daughter was connected the my husbands ancestor. You are right that there is much of history we were never taught in school.

Even within families! I didn't know about my great-grandmother until I was an adult!

Ciao mystery poet, you now have 6 votes.

Nanyehi believed that the only way her people would survive was through peace talks.

She even favoured the whites and warned them of two Cherokee planned attacks and in return her village was spared.

She told her people not to sell the land. Personally, I think she was naive to think the Whites, greedy as they were, would have left them their lands to cultivate.

Not selling their land meant sooner or later they would have ended up fighting and ultimately dying on said lands.

I think, this would have been preferable than seeing their land stolen and being rounded up and sent to some reserve.

What I'm trying to say is that the Cherokee (and any tribe for that matter)
were facing a NO WIN SCENARIO.

Thank you so much for the review and you insightful thoughts. I agree they were facing a no win situation. The Cherokee saw selling their land as a way to survive, but many died anyway as they were forced west. I really appreciate you voting for this an putting me back in second place. :-)

This is a wonderful entry into the Celebrate Women's History Month contest. The text is a great size for reading. That's especially important with long pieces of prose. I like all the information you shared about this remarkable Native American woman's leadership and drive to better her tribes' lives. What I don't understand is why she kept warning the frontier militia about pending attacks from the Cherokee tribe. Wouldn't this make her responsible for the death of her own people" I taught my students about the Trail of Tears. This was a fascinating and informative reading. I love learning and by you sharing her story I learned about a great lady I didn't know. Your writing is presented with clarity. Your visual fits perfectly. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you so much Sandra. As to your question about her warning the militia about the pending attacks, I'm not sure but when the Indians attacks the villages they were very brutal. Maybe she believed that if the military were on guard her people would be less likely to attack and fewer would be slaughtered. I'm just guessing. She earned the respect of the military this way and they more likely to work to get a peaceful settlement in treaties. I really appreciate the six stars.

I've always been impressed by women like this such as Joan of Arc and many others who stand up for themselves and will defend their honor to their eventual death.
Your picture was quite amazing by the way and I can imagine her looking that way in her early 20s.
Watch Incredible was this happened so many hundreds of years ago when women had no chance for free speech, let alone a vote

My Complete Synopsis;
The Adjective and Objective Contents were both Excellent and Exceptional while Descriptive Measures aligned Perfectly.
Good luck with your contest entry.

The story brings much authority to the Indians. It is very interesting that this woman, Nanyehi, had so much power to lead her tribe. She must have been respected to many Indians. Like your story.

Thank you Rosemary. It the beginning she seem to get respect by being a warrior but later she kept the respect by being a peacemaker.

This is a beautiful story about a wonderful woman. She reached the height of men in her tribe as a chief. She could be a warrior, but she was a woman of peace. Beautifully done. Have a blessed day..

You have written a great article about a woman way ahead of her time. I wish I was taught about her in history courses. Your writing is excellent and shows how much Nancy Ward accomplished in her life time which was extraordinary. This is an excellent entry for the contest.

I'm reading some amazing stories of some incredible women. That this lady was given the honour to speak for her tribe, that she was given the name of Beloved Woman, she really must have been an incredible, lady of her time. I really enjoyed your story and wish you the best of luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

Excellent choice. Well done.
This was very informative.
The period of Indian removal was brutal and criminal, particularly since it was sponsored by pure jealousy and greed.
Nancy ward sounds like a very forceful woman.
Good luck in the contest.
