I have a cousin off grid, and he loves it. I think it takes a special person to survive the hardships of being off the grid. You did a great job with your story. Until next time. Shirley

I grew up in a time where many farmers lived mostly self-sufficient lives. My grandparents were close to being off the grid as they had no electricity. The family had outdoor toilets, smoke house, barn, and blacksmith shop. They farmed the land, killed hogs, and chickens for meat and had a good life. I'm glad I had the opportunity to see what this lifestyle was like. I loved it but have learned to appreciate modern conveniences. I enjoyed your well-written story as you explored the way landsteaders live these days. Good luck in the contest.

Thanks for the lesson. Did you learn by reading or have you lived the life, or maybe are, though how do you communicate via a computer if "way out where" cars don't pass by? Well done.

Excellent introductory paragraph to lure the reader. The third paragraph provide a guide on how to find the right spot to settle in. The next two paragraphs mention problems and how to fix them. You make a good point about the value of wildlife at the end.

It's a very interesting concept and a sustainable as well as long as you have the will.and the courage to.do it. Because I truly believe it takes courage to live off the grid. On the other hand, the rewards would be great. Living close to nature is in itself reward enough in so many ways. Good luck. Ulla:)))

This is an interesting article on homesteading. I had a nephew-in-law who wanted to do it, but didn't look into it enough. He bought property but soon found he couldn't do what he wanted because of zoning and hunting restriction in the area he chose. There was wildlife, a bear nearly got him, but he had to observe the hunting season for each animal which limited his ability to provide the meat they needed.
I admire those that can live this lifestyle. It isn't easy and certainly tests their abilities.
Excellent article.

To the novice, living off the grid may sound romantic but as you have illustrated here, it is a harsh and demanding life. Not one for the faint of heart or lazy. Having grown up without running water or electricity for a part of my life, it's not one I've aspired to as an an adult.

My husband has mentioned living off the grid, but unfortunately for him, he doesn't have an off the grid type of wife. He has done what he can do, though, by growing fruits and vegetables and canning them, and buying canned meat which we rotate so it doesn't expire. He does expect a huge depression. Thank for sharing this contest entry with us. It flowed nicely and good luck with the contest.

it has forced many of them to revert to a more simple (simpler)

you quickly see that the people depicted chose this lifestyle for a myriad of reasons, (you can omit 'that')

While, Moose, Elk, Bear, Caribu, Deer (Caribou??)

Great read. Your article was informative and well-written.
People don't realize being self-sufficient is a lot of work.
In my small community, bartering has always been another means of self-sufficiency. Everyone has some sort of skill or product that can be traded for another.
Thanks for the wonderful read.

I enjoyed your heartwarming post and living off the grid is something that most people only dream of. I think people these days suffer more from mental illness because they are self absorbed and have lost their purpose in life, whereas those who have to grow vegetables and look after livestock and live mostly outdoors seem to stave off mental illness as they are too pre-occupied with survival. There is a lot to be said for this kind of lifestyle. I'm not sure I could choose it because I like too many home comforts, but I do appreciate nature and want to preserve it as much as possible. I enjoyed your in-depth view of being self-sufficient in the wild here, love Dolly x
