Hi Bill, I can relate, in a blind prompt of a short work I received both a six-star and a one-star rating, pretty confusing, so I guess there are some people who just don't get it, when reviewing if I really don't understand I just don't comment, an excellent rant, best wishes for your contest****kahpot

A very deserving rant - a one-star! What a stab to the heart! They seem to think they are on a spiritual mission to find true meaning and have their "soul" shaken by poetic words. Maybe they have watched The Man from Lamancha a little too much!
Admittedly I seldom give even a four; it has to be something I can give advice on something that needs improvement. There are some I may not understand, so I do not comment on, or for that matter, consistently bad posts from a writer that I could not improve his writing, so I do not comment on, but I do when he submits a real gem.
My goal is not to have the earth shake beneath my feet when I read a poem but for cleverness, creativity, and enjoyment of the post.
You do not deserve a low rating; in being so critical, they are robbing themselves of enjoyment and your cleverness and creativity.
Good luck in the contest.

Thanks, Mary. The rating system is a learned process; the numbers reflect a view from the top looking down at the unwashed masses. We, the proletarians, read and review as peers.

Does Paragraph Two not sum up not much has changed in how Newbies think about FanStory when they first join the site? It would not exist without chaos if they were not there. Unfortunately, it seems some Oldies also feel this way. Have run across a few of them too.
"Positive reviews" are not always the best route to take. All that seems to do is add to the Good Ole Boy Review system of this site. You know, the "I will give you a five star review, and you give me a five star review, no matter how shoddy the writing actually is" syndrome.
If one is not comfortable with what they review, or it is not their cup of tea, perhaps the best thing to do is not review it. Chasing Funny Money remains one of the biggest issues with FanStory. Until that improves, there is no telling what review a member may receive.
Probably more annoying than receiving that uninformed Newbie review is a member is not permitted, by site rules, to even "question" that review unless it is a personal attack. Then, they must report it to Tom to have the review deleted.
This rant addresses an issue believe most members encounter at one time or another, maybe even more often than that.

And I'm with you, I wish they'd go somewhere else, or learn to read and listen, rather than come slinging an onslaught of ignorance. We all believe everything we do is worth at least a 5. There was a time we could go back and change a rating, but I think it fixed now where it can't be changed. At least a five can no longer be changed to a 6. Thankfully if we only get one low rating, it might deflate our ego but it doesn't count. I agree with your rant, but you are supposed to say "I feel better now." per rules.
