Hah hah, how could I not like this?(I smelt a rat at the beginning of the story, (or was that a skunk?) but I thought it might have been a hobo at first, I take it shanks aren't a social animal? Beautifully written my friend, blessings Roy

Thank you. Skunks are pretty much solitary, especially the males. The females raise their young, but don't stay with them after they can fend for theirselves.

Oh very clever! At first, I wondered if this was biographical - but it did not fit with your bio. Then I was picturing some lone bum riding the rails and stealing where he could - and then you put that hammer blow final line in that was so unexpected.
And yes, it must be lonely being a skunk. I often wonder what their perfume really smells of - but I won't be annoying one any time soon. Not in England anyway! xx

Thank you. I don't think you would enjoy skunk perfume. We smell it a lot here in Michigan. When a skunk is hit on the road it stinks up every car that passes by.

Very well done. It almost reads like poetry.
This is very unique. I was thinking some sort of bird (I don't know why).
I've eaten skunk at a men's wild game dinner. The taste held a feint aroma of ol' Pepe' Le Pew.
Best wishes.

Thank you. I can't imagine eating a skunk. It would be right up there with snake

This is by far a story of someone who wants to be left alone, totally alone. Does not need interaction, nor does he seek it from anyone.

Just let him be.
A good entry into the contest. Best of luck!
John

Thank you. I think most skunks feel that way. With them, it is live and let live.

Well now, you're starting to sound like George. A lady here, a lady there... nowhere permanent to stay. A nomadic life to lead. Except he sleeps either in his van or a motel, if he's not with one of his lady friends.
This was a very interesting write, from the point of view of a man... lol

LOL, I do think leaving this old fella alone is a wonderful idea! This is a very fun creative entry for this contest, good luck. After the twist at the end, I enjoyed thinking about the setup, well done. Terry.

I'm out of 6s, PB, or this would be one. So clever and well-written. At first I thought you were describing Jack Reacher.

This was like a riddle: Who am I? This was so beautifully done, and all the clues are there. Bravo!

Thank you. Well, I hope the contest committee likes it as well as you do. If there is one animal that likes its privacy, it is a skunk.

I enjoyed the twist at the end of this contest entry. I'm sure being a skunk is a lonely business. One night my youngest son, Steven was coming home from football practice. He called me, "Mom, I'm home, but sitting in my car parked in the driveway. A skunk has me cornered. I need to wait until he leaves to come in the house." Good luck with the contest.

Thank you, and thanks for sharing you funny story with me. One night I let my dog our to do her thing, and she came back smelling like skunk.

This is an interesting post. At first I thought it might be a bear but then you talked about sleeping in barns and not doing bodily harm to dogs, so I thought maybe a skunk. Nicely done. Good luck in the contest.

I think it's a witty little post with a great, humorous twist at the end when we find out you are not talking about a hobo, you are talking about a skunk. The personification of animals or projecting human characteristics of personality onto animals is an interesting phenomenon to me. It's as old as the hills, some kind of mechanism people have, to think of things in terms of their own experience. And your post raises some interesting questions about the similarities of people and skunks. I thought you put plenty of personality in the writing yourself here; it was fun to read. estory

Thank you. I have lived with animals around me all my life. Animals do have different personalites just like people. Some of the traits in animals are human-like.
