If I read this correctly, happiness only occurs when something you want to happen occurs. Joy on the other hand is internal and exists despite external conditions or influences.

I looked up the meaning of happiness and speaks of it being characterized by feelings of joy, so one contains the other, I suppose. Yet, if you are using the Bible verse from John to write from, this poem makes perfect sense. Plus it sounds nice when it flows off the tongue:-)

Good luck with the contest.

Pam

Thank you for your thoughtful and interesting review. I was looking at the meaning of both words from the biblical senset. I think someone who is grief-stricken would not consider themselves as happy; however, in faith they could have a joyful heart. I appreciate your insight.

Your contest entry was well thought out, John. I enjoyed
reading it. I liked the way you defined happiness and joy
as two different concepts. Yes, happiness is somewhat
fleeting depending on the situation. But joy is something
one feels deep inside, and it helps when things in life hit
that aren't always positive.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes in the contest, Jan

John,

I really like this one. The difference between the two was punctuated for me when I found for my husband (adopted) his biological heritage and four surviving siblings. Their reunion could described only as overflowing with joy.

Yes, there are no guarantees in life, even scripture tells that. But it does say remain thankful, for a night in the valley will be rewarded with a day on the mountain top. Beautifully written John, good luck, blessings Roy

Considering you only have two lines, this poem touches on a profound idea.
Life is unpredictable and joy and sorrow intertwine. Some may attribute it to chance, others like the poet to faith. In this respect the illustration iis appropriate.

Sometimes the deepest joy can be felt in the deepest sorrow. During those times, there is no room for happiness. Thank you for your review.

A brilliant comment on the difference between "happiness" and "joy" in your essence poem! Happiness is a temporary emotion but joy can deal with "tears tomorrow." Best wishes in the contest!

Hi John,
I liked this two line poem very much. These aren't always easy to write, as we try to pack a whole message into 12 little syllables.
Nicely done :)
Susan :)

Thanks Susan. You're right, it requires some effort to squeeze meaning into so few syllables. Luckily, I'm a simple writer with few words. I appreciate your review.

This is a great two-line entry for the contest. It is a very succinct and insightful differentiation between happiness (which can be fleeting) and joy (which is more lasting and stable). Well done.

Uh-oh...I forgot the contest requires an internal rhyme, as well. I had to go back and do some tweaking.

Beautifully penned and illustrated poem in time for Christmas! Yes, our joy as Christian's runs deep.

You hit the nail on the head with the external and external rhyme, John.

My very best today as always and best wishes for the upcoming contest,
Sal :))
