Oh, my. Standing among those poppies and paying tribute to the many lives lost must have been emotional. I'm told there are many fields of poppies in Europe. Each one ought to remind us of the price of war and liberty...or the effort to achieve it!

We stayed in Alsace with friends, who were younger than us and gave up their bed, (which made me feel bad) they climbed nightly on a ladder in the attic bedroom, saving our old bones, we visited that very town you stayed in, saw the storks, beautifully written, blessings Roy

Thank you Roy for your great review. I just put my glass stork on my Christmas tree this morning. Happy holidays. After Christmas, I want to try some poetry. Sarah

I thought I had replied. Thank you for your kind words. Riquewihr looked like the background for a Disney movie. I put my glass stork on my Christmas tree this morning. Thank you ever so much! Sarah

Thank you for sharing this post with. I remember how beautiful the poppies were while we were living in Germany. My husband was Army. We did two different tours there, for a total eight years. I am enjoying you bringing back memories.

Thank you Barbara for your kind words. I appreciate your taking the time to read and review my work. Don was teaching at Bordeaux Business School. We managed to do and see a lot of France while we were there. And, I am enjoying reliving the memories also. Sarah

Good work. Good writing.
Being on the German/French border does not sound ideal for inhabitants of the 20th century.
The red poppies are beautiful.
Best wishes.

Thank you Wayne for your kind words. I appreciate your time reading and reviewing my work. And you are right about this not being a good time to be there. Our world is a scary place now. Sarah

Thank you for that piece of history. You wrote it so well. It seemed like a beautiful place with sedate surroundings. Through your adventure, I learned a lot.

Your stories make me want to go on a holiday to France.
Red poppies are quite a popular war symbol in Europe (there is a popular song "the Red Poppies of Monte Cassino", which refers to the Battle of Monte Cassino from 1944).

Thanks, Joanna for your nice review. I have enjoyed the people and the history of every place we have been. Now, I want to look up Monte Cassino. Again, thanks. Sarah

What a great post! Actually, I would be most interested in the Alsatian speech as they must mix German and French. I was shocked to learn how one brother was conscripted by the Germans and the other by the French. How awful! I found your post fascinating about the winery and reverent about those who served in the war.

Thank you for your great review. I think all of the people speak both French and German. And a lot of them speak English as well. My husband taught his classes in English at Bordeaux Business School.

I enjoy reading of your varied adventures as you travel to intriguing places and enjoy delightful experiences. I can't begin to imagine how it felt to spend evenings in the Hotel De La Couronne, built in 1550, or traveling on the same winding road as General Patton, or taste Hugel family wines. But, according to your profile, you have been fortunate enough to experience living in many countries around the world.

Thank you for your great review. I have been a very lucky lady to have the opportunities to live in several places. Actually, the hotel was interesting. We were on the 2nd floor. We had to carry our suitcases up the steps. There were no elevators. But, it was electricity that I missed the most. I couldn't dry my hair or use the curling iron. But, there was an interesting shower!

What an awesome holiday you and hubby spent, Sarah. It was
filled with so much history. You did a great job describing the
things you saw and the tours taken. I can imagine the historical
significance of being there for the holiday and seeing how the
military was honored. Staying at a hotel built in 1550 would have
been awesome too. The picture was great and truly represented
those who fought and died and who we all owe so much to.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

Thank you ever so much for your kind words. I appreciate your taking the time to review my work. After we climbed the vineyard, I looked back at the steep hill and knew I could not get down with my eyes open because I don't do well in high places. Our guide found the route on the winding road and I was glad! Thanks again.

You gave us an nice little account of your tour through the Alsace. History, culture, and the pretty landscape come across here. Gewurtztramminer is one those gems of that region, one of my favorite wines. Sweet, sharp, a great desert wine. I wish you had dwelt a little more on the family of the vineyard and gave us some more personal moments rather than just a glimpse at the family history. It would have made this come alive a bit more. More interaction with the locals, in the restaurants and bars, in the museums. Don't just tell us. Put us there with you, talking to the locals, discovering who they are and why. estory

Thank you ever so much for your comments. I honestly thought people would be bored with my interactions with the locals. The truth is they were great. You have given me the courage to write about those things. Again, thanks. Sarah
