Sorry I did not see this earlier, as I have been out of town for a week or more again. I find it hard to post here using my IPad. Thank you for sharing the comments about your vignettes. I always enjoy them.

I would give you a six for this right now, but honestly I only have one left.
I read this the other day and forgot to review after I went to read Sally's review to you. Well you hit some sore spots with me because the memory is just from this morning when I got slashed by FM first of all for my subject. And the subject was to answer w humor back to someone else's post about similar subject.. Then it was the format. Well the format she used was one of her Circus poems so I had to use it back or it wouldn't have been funny. All of this was explained in authors notes, but he must have gotten pd twice for Sunday, but didn't bother to check out the notes or he would have not criticized me for saying that I loved a materialistic item and why it was even written. A pair of shoes is boring by itself, but if you read the damn notes you might get the humor. DUH!! Oh heck, your getting that six anyway for two reasons ; your story was delightful and funny. I actually got it because I pay attention to detail. Can I say duh again? Oh yeah, that's the second reason your getting it, because you just sat there and read my rankings over something so stupid. But I feel better, so thanks Terry. ... just send the bill for
my therapy session to the address your billing department already has. hehe!
I obviously found your story relatable, as I am sure everyone did!

We've likely all got a basket of whopper reviews...
Most are fair, many are helpful.
It's the three and four star reviews for not liking my story, (which was a poem)--
Or my poem, (which was a story...)
Or the font, background color, image chosen, TOPIC...
I used to grit my teeth...
Now I refuse to "engage" in review badminton...
Call me crazy, but I often "PM" an author with a heads up on a typo, or misspelled word.
Love the satirical lilt to this!
We have young teens here...
I know of one who quit after being bullied with red pencil sarcasm.
So much easier to be positive and encouraging!
(As you are....ALWAYS!)

Sparkling in your lines: observations, contrast and humour.
-Everyone goes through that, musicians, actors, poets.
-Somehow reading your story made me feel better and not so bad about reviews.
-A great reminder: read everything, including the back of the cereal box...and reviews.
And do not read into everything. Everybody keep doing your version of you.
Thank you for dealing with sensitive material, with aplomb and kindness. Writing that catches the eye.

Terry, this was an interesting post. While negative reviews are part of the process, what gets me are those who get on their high horse. (where have I heard that before?) They believe that their job is to act as an editor. I had one who told me the story was not interesting.
I appreciate suggestions or corrections when they are helpful and done in good faith.
Maybe I am not being honest, but I rarely give a bad grade. I look for originality, creativity, and how the story or poem affects me emotionally. As for corrections or suggestions, I offer them without deducting a grade. To me, it should be a learning experience both for the reader and the writer.
One thing I do, If I see a work that I think the writer should have given up when he or she puts the first word down while others are patting him or her on the back, I will skip over, I will not give praise if I truly think the work is bad. It may be I do not get the message, or it is not to my taste, or it really really is bad.
(If I skip over your work, it is because I am often loaded up with reviews from some writers with several posting at once, and I cannot keep up. I also have a crappy computer that stalls out constantly.)
I always look forward to your posts and your uniquely creative pen. You are not a skip over that's for sure.

For me, I reward originality and creativity as well as an interesting or moving theme. Accurate spelling and grammar are important, but not the only things. If I am totally engrossed I may miss those unless they are hit-you-in-the-face obvious.
Anyway, this was original - haven't seen anyone write solely about reviews before!
