I listened to the eight-minute song and paid special attention to the lyrics. I remember this iconic song of the sixties. You did a fantastic job of explaining every lyric with a mention of events. Best wishes in the contest.

Oh thank you so much my sweet friend! I appreciate your kind words and the common love of the song. I was in tenth grade when this came out so maybe we are close to the same age? But thanks again for your thoughtful review!

Nobody knew, including Don McLean, how this song would be woven into the fabric of American history, and it still is just as powerful today. What a wonderfully written poem.

Good luck in the contest!
Have a great day, and God bless.

Hello Author, I remember American Pie very well. You did a good job with this song by including events of the time. All of them I remember.

Of special note:
"And three men I admire most; the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
They took the last train for the coast, the day the music died"

(You know that things are bad when the Holy Trinity leaves town.)

Well done. As this is a contest entry, I wish you good luck.

Margaret, you are so very sweet. I cannot get too much of this song. That is why I picked it, as just like everyone, the nostalgia has happy but sad memories. Especially remembering where we were when Kennedy was shot. I think I was in third grade at the time, in country school. The fact that so many here have such similar feelings looking back at that day, brings so many of us together. Not sure if you read this too, but more recently when McLean is asked what this song means, he says it means he doesn't have to work again. Lol! Thanks my friend for you kind comments!

An interesting reading of the lyrics of the song. The poem flows well and the presentation is well laid out. Thanks for including the song, although I remembered it well anyway. The feeling of nostalgia tinged with loss on several levels is at best bitter-sweet.

Thanks for a good read.

As special songs go, this is about as pertinent as it gets for many from my generation. We sang the song (all eight minutes plus, of it) and we thought we knew the meaning of every line ~ or we didn't wait to ponder, we simply adopted it as an anthem of change. I've read so many "takes" on what each line means...and Don McLean famously said he didn't feel he had to explain his true intent of meaning--so I especially enjoyed your poetic form, offering lyric and meaning, again and again. I ventured off to YouTube and listened to several covers of this song--and more than a few "interpretations."

You've done it justice; you've made it your own and in doing so you've brought up many memories. Excellent and ambitious presentation.

I'm in love with the song all over again.

Well! I'll bet he's right about that! Back in the day I used to go to a Karaoke club....we ended every night with a "group sing" of American Pie...

    Loved that!

This is a very creative way to commemorate your special song. American Pie was released in 1971 and I was old enough to know the country was in turmoil. Your video with all the lyrics, took me back to those days. The words to your smooth flowing poem is another poetic reminder of the time. Best wishes in the contest.

Lorraine, I thank you for your very kind comments for my poem and the use of 'American Pie.' So nostalgic to most of us, I love hearing what it means to others. I think one important thing is where we were when JFK was killed. That is one most remember. Once again I appreciate your lovely review, my friend.

I absolutely love this, mystery poet! I listened to this song until I wore it out. It's funny how the song came true for us as a nation. A nation that has kicked prayer out of public schools, defund police, and think it's okay to murder innocent preborn children, just to name a few of the Helter Skelters....

We are fulfilling Don McClean's prophecy: The three men I admire most, the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, they caught the last train for the coast the day the music died.

Thank you for sharing and for the song!

Sending you my best today as always and best wishes for the upcoming contest.
Sally :)) XOs

Beautiful written poem. This was nicely done and well written. I love the way that you used references to the song American Pie. It made the poem very enjoyable and easy to read. The rhyming and descriptive words that you used, well done. Thank you for sharing.

Jacquelyn, you are so sweet! I did lots of research on this before writing and found these were the most popular ideas of what the song meant. Such a Time of nostalgia for all who I hear from. However when McLean was asked what it meant to him, he said that it meant he never had to work again. Lol. Thanks for your very kind comments! Much appreciated my friend!
