The plight of certain immigrants is certainly dire. I think intolerance and lack of compassion are terrible failings. Your poem is excellent, but will it open peoples' eyes? It's a formidable task. Kate xx

I fear that poets do more to make people aware of situations rather than acting as motivators to action.

Interesting take on current events. I thought at times your views waivered a little bit, sort of going back and forth, but that could just be me in the way I was reading it.

It could be. I was not criticizing things as much as I was just describing what I see when I look at our country.

This is a very well written and so very true poem you have penned my friend. It is very sad for those seeking a better life and being unwelcome and in a place that is not any better then where they were. Thank you for sharing. Teri

Congratulations on making your 300th milestone. That's quite a feat and you deserve the praise. I enjoyed reading your poem and I welcome immigrants from all countries. I just wish they would come in legally. Living in Texas and seeing first-hand what is happening gives me a slightly different viewpoint. Also please note, I taught at a bi-lingual school. I have no problems with people from other countries.

I believe your true personality come through in your writing, and to me, you are a wonderful person. A person I feel privileged to know and be able to associate with. Only a fool who does not know you would ever think differently.

I think it's the same in all the 'First World'. We should show more compassion and realise the world belongs to all of us. Here in Spain, there are people who complain about immigrants, but they don't realise they often do the jobs nobody else wants (at the moment, for example, there's a lack of waiters in Spain because the pay is low, the hours long...).
The topic of your poem is really relevant, it's one I've always been interested in: one of my best friend came to Spain on a raft. Luckily, as he's very resourceful, he soon found a job, got a green card... Now he helps other immigrants as much as he can.
When will we realise that we are all the same? People. Simply people.
Thanks so much for sharing this.

Certainly, a controversial topic made worse by political game-playing. Our international failure to help those affected countries be able to provide a safe and productive government of their own has led to this flight. America is the shining beacon still, and attracts all who yearn for more out of life.

I am reminded of a bit comic Trevor Noah did when he said an Indian was asked why he emigrated to England, the Indian stated, "You told me that Britain was great, so I came here to see for myself." We always brag about how great the US is, and then get mad when people come here to see if it is true.

There will always be predigest people when it comes to
emigrants. There is no reason for it, but it is a fact.
We have them and there is no way to explain it. As long as they are legal I say they have every right to be here. It is the illegals who pose a threat. Well done. Nancy:)

The problem as I see it is , we over promote life here in the US. When someone living in abject poverty see how well we live here, they are willing to risk even death to come here. For some, life on the streets here is better than living in a shack in a country where death looms everywhere, all the time and hunger is a way of life.

I think back to when all the old people used to talk about the state of our out-of-control world, wondering what they would think if they could see it now. Thanks for another fine post.

Immigration is a complex question that has been further complicated by confusing pragmatism with racism; but that's not a
consideration in this poem that speaks of the suffering endured by hopeful emigrants. This poem references the contradictions present in American policy and implicitly cites racism as a cause of injustice with respect to immigration. This poem, "Immigration Blues," finds grounds for criticism very functionally, but its use of examples is familiar and perhaps a little fatigued. And - objecting to being asked for an ID card, something that is now routine everywhere, seems a weak way to end the poem.

Asking for an ID card when it makes sense is not objected to, but if it is solely on the basis of speech or appearance it is outright racist. If you cannot see that then that speaks volumes about you.

-Thanks for sharing the image, notes, and poem, nomi,
and congratulations on post number 300. This is a good way to celebrate it by sharing about the immigrants in our country.
-A very good opening question and effective rhyme and imagery to make your points.
-I like how you include the quote from the Statue of Liberty, and then
show how people who are different might end up being treated.
-Thanks for sharing it.
