Oh, my! I feel so gifted by having read this prose-ode to friendship. You've dug deeply into your emotions -- hence your readers emotions when you wrote this, because there is such universality in the truths you uncovered here. And as a gift to you, it will give your post the ATB status that it so richly deserves.

Some keen insights! Such as being too exuberant in one's avowal of friendship to new friend and having it put a strain on that relationship. Such insight also on the value of snail-mail as a touchstone to the depth of a friendship.

There are jewels of great worth in your post. I only wish I had a six to award it.

Hi Rachelle, this was a very interesting analysis of what true friendship is. It very true everything you say. I have a few who I can say are true friends and we talk on a regular basis. We live far apart, but we visit each other as often as possible. It is indeed a richness to have true friends. Ulla:)))

You did an amazing job exploring the complicated and multifaceted nature of friendship. It's so honest and authentic. I also completely agree with you that having a true friend is rare and meant to be cherished.

You're warm and kind with your reviews, and I'd bet anything you're the exact same way when you interact in person. I bet you lots of good friends, because you get whay you give in this life. Thank you for warming up my day today. Xo

(Sung to a childish and lilting melody) A fly on the wall, a fly on the wall, I woke up to a fly on the wall!

Yippee! And as always, it did not disappoint. I love that you broke your mold of storytelling to expound on friendships (as subject you are most qualified to expound on). It will give a wonderful jolt of meaning in your book.

My favorite (although everything you say is excellent and so true) is your paragraph that states...I liken it to a recipe that starts with two wonderful ingredients. But whether they meld together and rise into one spectacular entity or get tossed into the trash before they make it to the oven depends on a great number of variables. Like cooking, friendship is a process.

You have to stick with the process to sometimes get the richest relationship with someone. God has often surprised me with who actually becomes my most intimate and sincere friends. It is often those that I feel like it will never happen. But somehow, through the cooking, it does.

I count it a joy that someone with so many rich friends is becoming a friend of mine. And a friend connected with such a long buried dream of writing.

And now, the melancholy of having finished the new chapter in Fly on the Wall. It always comes. I enjoy this endeavor of your so much and it always leaves me a little sad after the last word is written.

What a wonderful posting. It made my heart warm to read it. You have absolutely encapsulated what true friendship is. A rare and precious thing that continues to glow through the years regardless of time and distance.

This piece on friendship is important as people sometimes forget what a good friend is or how to be one. Of course, making sure we fulfill that description is equally important. I have a close friend at this point, after traveling for years and narrowing my parameters. My wife is my greatest friend.

I feel like that about my husband. I call him my True North.
Thank you for this beautiful review...and thanks for the extra star, too. I appreciate both very much. xo

My kingdom for a six! You've done it again, Rachelle-- Instilled your de!rightful wit, wisdom and insight and come up with some universal threads in the tapestry of friendship!

Seems to me when two kindred spirits come together it is almost organic...the puzzle pieces fall into place as each completes the other...

I'd rather have a few true friends than fifty acquaintances!!!

Give me the friend who will show up and pitch in folding laundry over miss nose in the air at some club luncheon!

My "bad hair day" posse keeps me going!

Great write!

I love this review. I especially agree with "I'd rather have a few true friends than fifty acquaintances." Exactly my thought, as well.

This is EXACTLY why I love our burgeoning friendship. xo

This is an interesting article. It is great to have close friends that last through the decades. I must admit, my relationships are not as close as yours, but we are always glad to see each other.

You expressed beautiful thoughts on friendship in this. I enjoyed your description of how easily the pre-schoolers can make friends. But they're trusting. Adults always have questions and aren't so trusting. Maybe they get burned a few times by friends who disappoint them. My problem is at my age, most of my friends are dead. Love your quotation at the end: "If you have nothing in life but a good friend, you are rich. So true. Excellent essay. judi
