You capture the HEARTBREAK here of the Speaker, who for a moment feels his dead wife is with him on this moonlit night by the lake. But then he realizes she isn't. Great image of that revelation--"the smoldering ash" when he opens his eyes to find himself "covered by Autumn's dried crackling dead leaves." Rod
