This contest entry caused me to ponder what five objects I would take. It would be extremely hard to choose. One our first move to Germany, it was still during the Cold War. Every time the Russians moved to the border we were told to go into high alert. This meant be ready to leave at a moment's notice. We only allowed to take essentials, no 5 items. Nothing ever happened, but we were always ready. Good luck with the contest.

Actually it is 'life' bird. I am a birder and keep a life list of bird species seen, where and when. I have approximately 600 on my list and would not want to be unable to identify on that came into my path. thanks for the kind and encouraging review and for sharing some of your life experience.

I'm sure any such predicament would be very trying, but for me, I don't think I'd be too worry about saving anything but human lives, and especially, mine. Thanks for sharing.

I think one of the goals of the contest was to show some personality with the items you choose to save, and you did that very well. I think this is a great prompt, as it puts life into perspective very quickly.
I live in California and have been in the position where a fire was so close that ash was falling on my car and I could see the flames cresting near my street.
My family and I had to evacuate.
While packing the kids and family pet in my husbands truck, I packed my car with valuables. My husband stood on the roof hosing it down until we drove away.
So you see, I actually had to pick and choose what I would take.
It was a no brainer!
*Baby boxes that I created for each of my children.
These boxes are filled with irreplaceable items.
Like the front page of the newspaper the day they were born.
The hospital bonnet knitted by volunteers,
first baby shoes, favorite toys, books.
A collection of their first year of life.
*Photos
*Books
After that it was the basics:
Food
Water
Clothes
Medication
I think this is an interesting concept, it really tells a lot about a person and what they value.

Thanks so much for sharing your own true story. I cannot truly imagine what it would be like to actually have to pack for a fire and not know if any would be left when i returned. My heart goes out to you.

An imaginative story that I enjoyed. I would definitely be at a loss to pick 5 items. I noticed your plug for your other stories; that's a great idea! It flowed well and I didn't see any spags. Maybe just a little more descriptive using the five senses to pull in the reader a bit more. However, well done!

It doesn't make a lot of sense. I would recommend trying to find a different reason. Maybe five 'small' objects that you can carry on a plane or rescue transport.
Otherwise, I like what you have. It is a strong contender.
