I agree, and being a mother is not easy. Parents try to do their best. And that is all we can do. As the child grows older, they decide to do right or wrong. I am sure you did the best you knew how. Thank you for sharing.

You are absolutely right! It is not easy being a parent. A lot of things are done through trial and error. Decisions made cannot be reversed. All we can hope for is that the right ones helped our children to stay on the straight and narrow,

Some men are good fathers because they have a very good example or template they can follow and emulate. Some like me, have no example or template to follow and so they have to sort of make things up as they go. I was fortunate because I was 30 years old when my first child was born. I also mad a determined effort to not be absent from the home they way my own father was.

I don't think there is such a thing as a perfect father or a perfect mother. I think children grow up despite the fact they have parents. The great news is that God is there to help. Thank you for sharing this beautiful poem with us.

You've penned an exceptional sonnet on the challenge of being a father. Your poem is honest and insightful and serves as good advice for fathers at all stages of the journey of fatherhood. Well done.
I'm curious as to why you separated the verses in the 3rd stanza.
I was not the father I wished to be.
I was not the father needed back then.
Life as a father, such sweet memory,
if only I could do it over again.

Bill, It's a fact we can all look back and wish we could change many things in the past, but of course we cannot do that so we may as well accept it as truth and move on. No one is perfect and we all make mistakes. You and I are living long lives. I wonder if there is another task that I have yet to fulfill or if I am just blessed with good genes. LOL I'm sure your children turned out okay. We can't help getting older and wiser. LOL Nancy:)

I have taken Jim's Meter class twice so I know something about meter in Sonnet. I find a few lines you didn't get the iambic meter correct. Anyway. I thought you are a good father and have a good relationship with your daughter. I only have one grown child and I have no regret so far. Our relationship has strengthened over time.
