Nicely written. Good work.
Unfortunately it's a sad commentary on your mother. What did your mother think of Ray Charles or Harry Bellafonte?
Good luck in the contest.

Thank you. I only remember her reaction to Elvis because it was so out of character for her. I don't know what she thought of other singers other than Johnny Cash. She loved him. Hugs

This was an interesting story. I liked how your mother battled against Elvis. I saw a few phrases I would change, but I don't think they were errors, so I won't worry you with them. You did a great job telling this. Thanks for sharing, and best wishes to you.

Thank you. I remember mom's reaction because it was not like her to speak so violently against something. Hugs

This is a very good entry for the contest, good luck. You have nicely captured the history of Elvis and how your mother's generation viewed him. You also did a nice job with the Steve Allen and Ed Sullivan shows history.

I was waiting for you to say you disagreed with your mother. Maybe you had to do that in private. I remember early on. There were two camps. Those who liked Elvis and those who liked Pat Boone. Good job. Terry.

Thank you. Actually, I agreed with my mother. Johnny Cash was my favorite singer too, and I didn't much care for Elvis's style or type of music. Maybe unusual for a teenager, but that is how I felt. Hugs.

Great nostalgic piece of the past. Each generation is criticize for their taste in music. Even in the 50s 'Shake, Rattle, & Roll' was considered the devil's music. GOOD LUCK IN THE CONTEST.

Thank you. I grew up listening to Johnny Cash so I preferred his music too. I never did care much for Elvis like the rest of the kids in my school Hugs.

Hi author of this entry,
My mother thought Elvis was
putrid, did not find him
attractive. He was a unique
performer with the hip move - ments and sultry voice. I heard he was very generous
to people. He was a young
man from the South who
grew up with modest surroundings and then shot
off like a rocket into fame and fortune, I think it overwhelmed him. I think
maybe his drug abuse started
with late hours and traveling
all over. It's a shame he died
still relatively young. Your
writing is superb. Good luck
with this great contender.

Thank you. Everyone has their good points along with the not so good, and Elvis was no exception. He did come from a good family and did help others at times. Hugs

Entertaining and enjoyable to read. Your mother wasn't alone in how she felt about Elvis. Plenty of the older generation felt the same way. My mother didn't comment on his gyrations or his singing voice but she was prudish and had a hard time with anyone who did what he did.
Good luck with the contest!

Thank you. My mother was a quiet woman, so it surprised me when she took such a vocal stand against Elvis. I think she was serious about throwing rotten tomatoes at him.

Your mother sounds as though she were an "old soul". I was very young during the times you describe here, but I sure remember the controversy he kicked up everywhere he performed.

You do a good job here of engaging your readers and offering a different look back at Elvis and his popularity - in this case lack of.

A different take on this writing prompt challenge. Good luck!

Thank you. This is what I vividly remember about Elvis. I was 10 in 1956, so Mom's extreme dislike of Elvis made a lasting impression on me. Hugs.

Hi there,

This was a good potted history of the man through a personal lens.

There's a line in an Eminem song which states - 'I am the worst thing since Elvis Presley to do black music so selfishly, and use it to get myself wealthy.'

Mom considered Elvis, a distasteful individual - no need for the comma after Elvis.

All the best

Thanks you. I don't know why I put a comma there. I must have been getting brain fatigue as It was late when I finished writing. Thanks for catching it. Hugs.

This is a really good description of Elvis and of the older generation's attitude toward him. It is sad that success seems to be so hard on so many brilliant performers, including Elvis.

Thank you. I was like Mom and never did develop a fondness for Elvis. Johnny Cash was my choice of singers too, but that might be becuase I listened to his music almost from the cradle. Hugs.

It would be hard not to like Johnny Cash with his distinctive voice and heartfelt songs. Elvis was a whole different songster.

Yes, I remember the adults complaining about Elvis.

Your piece flows well. The images are clear. The historical facts are well presented. The narrative stays on point. The language falls well into an essay format.

Thanks for a good read.
