I think many of us have experienced scenes like the one your described with the third-grade Popular Pretty Girl. And why do college and hazing so often appear in the same sentence? It's also hard to understand why this sort of thing happens in fitness clubs. Hope it goes better the next time you're there. Blessings.

That essay was from four years ago. You'll love how I evened the score, Carol: I became an AquaFit INSTRUCTOR!!! Hahahaha! Then they HAD to be nice to me!!!
reply by Carol Clark2 on 15-Aug-2022
Yes, I love that you became an instructor there. I think that comes under the category of 'heaping coals of fire' on the enemy! Lol.

Oh, gosh, what a superb write
on your experiences with
being hazed. I was bullied all
through grade school. I just
turned 65, and it still happens
on occasion with mostly
young men being rude and
cruel with the spoken word.
I was never a beauty. Anyway,
this is a brilliant write on your
life experiences with hazing.
Navy bootcamp wasn't easy but, it wasn't easy for
a lot of other young women
either. Thank you for penning
about your life experiences.
Many blessings to you. ~

Wow, Navy boot camp! I think you should show those young bucks a thing or two about respect!!

Thanks for this encouraging review. I appreciate it.

I love the the elements of this story. Nice how it took us back to your memories in grade school and the evolution of hazing...and in the end you hazed them too.

-Love the leopard suit, that said ready to rumba to me.

-I just love what you put into these stories and what I get out of them: humour and lessons in life, connecting it to your own growth and current events, somewhat like a Talk Magazine.
Well done. Have a nice day.

You really did quite well against the hazers in each case you described so well in this chapter. Clearly, none of them were able to intimidate you because you outsmarted them. If I had witnessed any of those events, I would have secretly cheered for you and then told you later, as I've always ranked heart and brains above appearance, though you had that too. Anyway, I enjoyed reading this. Superb.

You are most welcome, Rachelle. There is no way to defeat a truly righteous woman who is smart and bold enough to stand her ground. Your husband was wise to choose you as his life partner. :)) -- Mike

A read that kept my attention to the end. I've been 'hazed' in my senior years. Not only did it bring back painful memories but made me realize how cruel peers can be-- a carry-over of their behavior throughout life.

These are all such compelling incidents of hazing. I never thought of it occurring with senior citizens, especially that disgusting man. I don't why people join fraternities or sororities in college if they have to endure such indignities. I've even heard of young people dying as a result of some hazing activity. Just a thought--is there anyone to whom you could report that man's behavior at the AquaFit class? Excellent write. judi

    Hi!
No, no one ever did anything to him, which shocked me! [Was he 'connected' to a Power That Be? Or did he just get a pass bc he was so old. The old "Just Let Him Be." At any rate, it's a moot point now. After COVID, I never saw him again.
reply by judiverse on 13-Aug-2022
What was he doing in there with a bunch of women, anyway? If you never saw him again, your worries are over. judi

It is a co-ed class, but many datimes, there's only a few men.

I hope you don't encounter any men like that one. judi

Hazing is a polite word for bullying: "but didn't go the extra mile of admitting that I, too, still sucked my thumb...every night, in the dark," This is too popular a belief: " Being a Popular Pretty sorority girl requires some sacrifices. Who doesn't know that!" This is a great image: "The flames from the candles around the room cast shadows onto the walls that looked like twitching elfin dancers casting a spell on me." Is this a foreshadowing for a cautionary tale? Interesting concept. You may have something here: "The diapers and bib had obviously worked their magic on poor LuAnne.)" I'm just going to read the rest. Ilike the resolve at the end. Well done.

I'm not sure if this terrifies me or challenges me to keep reading. Can there be anything more frightening than a group of aging women who see every stranger younger than themselves as a threat, a threat that must be eliminated.
It is however well written. Vindictiveness and bitchiness thrive. Your characterisation comes across splendidly.

This is so reminiscent of the movie "Queen Bees," except that, in the movie, the bullied eventually transform and befriend the bullies. It's also reminiscent of my school years, where I was literally bullied for not being a bully. By the way, the thought of hazing is why I never went out for a sorority. I'm not the type who would have given in to what they asked me to do, which would not have gone over well.

Obviously, your story is painfully relatable, and it's sad to realize that not every childhood bully outgrows the tendency. I respect that you fought back, and I love your last line, "Haze THAT, you Loch Ness monsters!" I hope you had the chance to say something equally biting to them in person.

If you don't mind one editing point, "quite" means "somewhat" or "very," which makes "quite full-to-capacity" an oxymoron. "Full-to-capacity" gets your point across without a modifier.

I actually got them all back but good by becoming an Aqua Fit TEACHER later that same year! Oh, how I wish I'd taken a picture of those faces!!

Good for you! I suspect that, if looks could kill, you wouldn't be standing here right now.
