I know my Maxwell (age 10) would love this for many reasons...the most important is he tried ALL of these debate points and scored BIG with a puppy the size of a small horse. (Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating--but she's part pit bull and about the gentlest thing this side of heaven!)
Naomi joined the family last year and it's safe to say she's firmly established herself as the queen of their household!

And does Maxwell look after her in accordance with all the promises?
Dogs will be gentle and loving if they know love. Thank you for reviewing.

Maxwell and Naomi are joined at he hip. Max is small for his age and Naomi easily outweighs him--but when it's time for doggie bath? NOBODY can soother her like her best bud!

Nice job, Wendy. I missed this one before the contest ended. Second place isn't too bad. It's kind of hard to take when you lose by only one vote.

Thanks Paul, very much. Yes, mine was leading, then tying for first, all the way through, till right near the end. That's okay though - it did better than I initially expected - but I am trying to work on my metre, you'll be pleased to hear.

I do think you would have some really good stuff if your meter improved.

Excellent entry for the Children's poem writing prompt Contest. You grasped the essence of children Poetry well. It's something my grand child would enjoy. Nice presentation. Your descriptive words flow well expressing clear mental imagery.
My grandson wants a dog too. (*<>*)
Good luck in the contest.

Thanks so much Gypsy. They always manage to sound so convincing, and have noble intentions, but ..... Lol. Thanks so much for your super review and encouraging words.

This poem hits all the right points about dog ownership. I love the light-hearted tone, so like a child. I really like the lines: "With my own dog I'd have such fun, I would never bother anyone"
. Consider changing "there" to "here" in stanza 3. I think it will add a more immediate feel and will still fit your rhyme.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful review. I did consider it, but I will leave it as it is for the sake of the rhyme.

I liked this piece. Not sure if it meets the contest challenge. Maybe. But it reads as if the child wrote it. Wasn't it suppose to be an adult writing for a child? Idk either or it remains right for a story to a kid.

Basically it just needed to be a poem to and for children. It passed the CEC requirements, so I guess it's okay. Thanks for your thoughts and review, and I am glad you liked it. Appreciated.

How do you turn down a plea like that? The only problem is that the mom or dad usually end up doing the feeding, watering and cleaning up the "you know what." Kids have good intentions, but it becomes too much work far too early.
Very familiar picture you paint here.

This is an excellent poem for young children in my opinion. It has simple concepts, a story that many can relate to, and appealing rhymes. Also, you have gone to efforts with your presentation so that it is user-friendly for the older children to read themselves. Kate xx

This is a great poem for a child. And children love dogs. Dogs are loyal, they make great companions for anyone. And if a strange comes to the door, they will let you know. A dog also knows kind people. Thank you for sharing.

The author's words are clear, exactly what kids say, clear, descriptive and
creative. The poem was delightful to read. Looking back many years this
is how my kids were able to talk me into two dogs! Thank you for the
author's notes - they speak volumes! The artwork is awesome!
