As usual, your advice has depth and substance, and I suspect if I want to see how it is used, I should peel back the skin of your portfolio and rad what is there for living examples.

My portfolio is as random as it gets!

This was a dark and stormy tutorial on getting a horror story up and running. I can never stay serious long enough to make mine anything but campy. Nothing funnier than a rotting corpse chasing someone through a pot-n-pan filled kitchen, a rake-handle hazard in a sheep- shearing shed, or a woods carpeted in bruin poop.

This is well written and gives very good advice to the writer of horror stories. All the basic knowledge needed to give the reader a real scare is packed into easy-to-read steps by this superb author. Well done and much help to every writer regardless of whether they write fiction or non-fiction.
Thanks for providing us with everything we need to write excellent horror tales.
Jesse

You have treated us to yet another wonderful writing lesson. I cannot imagine myself ever setting out to write fictional horror. However, you still get 6 stars from me for this. Your words will stand me in good stead for the horrific parts of the memoirs I write. And much of your advice is, as you know, applicable to the best of any sort of writing. Incidentally, your essay is useful to any reader/teacher who is trying to work out why a pupil's horror story isn't quite coming off. Thanks Kate xx

Horror isn't as odd or difficult as it seems. it's an emotion at the end of the day. Much appreciated, especially for using some of those valuable pumps on it. G
reply by Katherine M. (k-11) on 17-Aug-2022
Yes, but creating this emotion in others seems an impossible task to me. But I decided to try. I started a short play (An Absence Is Announced), and we'll see how it goes.
As for the pumps, one was what I figured I owed you coz you should have won that HP contest, the other was my tithe for that week (every week I put 1 pump I got for reviewing back where it came from - don't expect any more, I've never seen it land on the same person twice). Kate xx

I've never written horror, but this is really interesting. We can use these tips in other ways, building up to a nasty meeting, facing a bully at school, little things that do scare but not horror. That is an art on its own. Dean Cook/Kuch had the art down to a T. I will add this to my Gareth file, it might be needed in another book. You're very generous writing all these tips for us to improve, Gareth, and I for one really appreciate them. Well done again! :)) Sandra xxx

Yes he was. We've lost a few good ones on here recently. Really sad. xx
