It never ceases to horrify me how common it is for violence to be 'the norm' in households. I mean, everyone has a temper, sure, and everyone gets angry, but I can't fathom getting to the point of beating a family member. Yours is a very effective piece.

Yes Sandra. Domestic Violence became more perilous with Covid. Women have less places to run less resources available.
I wrote a poem some time ago called " Break Her Down". Maybe you would read it.

Thank you for sharing.

Excellent! I find this to be very in your face, which I really appreciate. As much as I enjoy metaphor and pretty prose, I think that would have been a disservice. Sometimes we need to be uncomfortable!
I loved the last line!

Thank you for your comments and rating my poem. I agree we need to be uncomfortable about hard issues if not they will never change.

It's horrible what some people have grown up with and witnessed in homes where alcoholism and domestic abuse reside. The insidious thing is that the abuser charms and forces guilt trips on the victims. Thanks for sharing the phone number to call and raising our awareness.

I agree. We cannot change what we do not talk about, but we know it exists. Thanks for reading and rating my poem.

Hi Sandra, no One should ever suffer from abuse. The pain and fear that you endured is beyond compare. Of special note:

On weekends peaceful rest hides.
(S, coming from a home of violence, I can relate to this. I have often said that some kids are safer on the street than within the confines of their own home--sad but true.)

Well chosen photo. A story like this needs to be shared for awareness and so that people recognize the Devil when they see him.

Today you wrote something brave. LateBloomer

Thank you for your comments and generous rating. I agree with you. It is terribly sad kids would rather live in the streets than at home. In the streets they encounter an entire new set of evil forces. Living is not easy. I appreciate your support.

When I was a child, Dad not only beat Mom, he beat me. I have seen several black eyes on my Mom. He would come home and accuse her of cheating on him. He started beating on me at four or five. We had to walk on eggshells not to disturb him. I was terrified of him. No one ever called the authorities on him until he beat me when I was around fifteen. He was sent to jail and then straight to the Mental Hospital for months. Thank you for the awareness.

    Carolyn,
It is heartbreaking to hear you had such a hard upbringing. With the molestation you had to also endure this. If you lived nearby, I would come over with a nice bottle of vino so we could chat. Your life and my life have so many similarities. I hope your life as an adult has been better. Thanks for reading and rating my poem.

I will always support other survivors. That's the only way we continue to survive. We need people who know and will never downplay our struggles.

The author's words are heartfelt, sad, are filled with abuse, are an alert,
descriptive and creative. I am so glad the author posted the Nat. Domestic Violence Hotline. The author gave a detailed account of what domestic violence is like. The poem flows and connects well. The artwork is heart breaking and goes well with theme and words of this poem.

Intense verse!!

You have captured the haunting feeling of a family with an abusive man.

The heart racing
anticipation of violence, and the painful aftermath of impact.

Bruises you can see and bruises felt within the soul.

The flow and tempo read smoothly from the first word to the verses end.

I like the repeated phrase ~
"on weekends peaceful rest hides."
Grounds the overall verse and guides the reader back to the beginning, creating a loop effect.

An important and impactful write!

Well done!!!

Wow, Sandra, a powerful poem, and unfortunately it's exactly spot-on, so real, raw and authentic. The image is confronting and the presentation is dramatic, underlining the depth of your words. Well done. I hope any who are affected by abuse will act quickly to get out - good to share the hotline number.

This is such a tragic message that you tell in your poem and it happens so frequently. You are so right, get help and get out. Best wishes. Jen.
