I do understand, but living it for the first, and only time, as we will not be with a beloved pet again, due to our getting too old to exercise them in our late seventies and eighties. Holding our dog as the toxic potion was administer was heart-breaking but if it was with us with him, how would it have been without us being there for a loyal and loved animal?

Ouch! This one hurts deeply as I fear for losing my Sunny who is fourteen and a half years old. She is the love of my life and I hope she lives a very long time.
I hope this isn't biographical and you have lost Lily? I didn't notice in your author's notes whether it was or not so I am sending my condolences just to be sure!

I hope Sunny is blessed with longevity so you can both continue to enjoy each other. I am pleased to report that Lily is in good health. I wrote this in response to a story I read yesterday by Tom Horonzy called 'Avoiding the Void', and his recent loss touched me.

I've had enough companions thus far to have a few sad memories, always accompanied by crowds of beautiful, affectionate ones :-). This is a beautifully written piece - you've even managed to avoid that stilted, false 'wise' tone that so many 575 poems have, lol. I very much enjoyed.
