Jay bird,
Sad but true. I'm right there with you. Older generations, especially the farmers, have treasures the young may never know - treasures money cannot buy, essential, irreplaceable and gone. Perhaps, the most valuable is the bond between young and old, grandchild to grandparent - the story telling, the memories of a very different yesteryear when life was simple, time was slow and family meant more than gadgets. We are the lucky ones.

Jaybird1: I totally agree. It is so difficult to gather the kids/grandkids/great-grand kids to spend some easy time with them talking about the 'good ole' days'. They seem to have no interest, no patience and no desire to know. I thoroughly enjoyed this poem. Linda

In restaurants I have seen families--EACH person messing with a cell phone. The adults are as bad as the kids. It's as though something on that little screen is more important than family. Your poem is so moving, and of a very timely topic!

It is a sad situation when gadgets replace visits with the older generation. We have so much to share but we can't complete with Google and Facebook.
Thanks for sharing.
Blessings

What nice memories of your grandfather. I'm thinking maybe it's not just the children with their gadgets, but we as adults have our gadgets, too. More people working in jobs where they don't control their own time. You are right, it is super important to make memories with your 'grands'! Love the poem!

I'm so sorry that your grandchildren are missing out in all the fun learning from your memories. Yes, they need to put down all those screens and learn to talk to you face to face when they can!
They are busy with their gadjets, (gadgets)
You had better park your gadjets, (gadgets)
join me in this oldtimers boat. (old timer's)

This is awesome my friend, as you sound just like my husband. Actually I wish our grandkids would visit more too, but those gadgets seem to have taken over everything. We have one grandson who is 12 and he doesn't want a phone, and just loves the farm here. He's a rare one, but he has loved it all his young life so we don't expect it to change anytime soon! I relate with missing talks with my grandpa. Beautiful poem Jay, and I thank you as I am in awe of your talent.

No I tend to agree.I see the same trend with my grandchildren. Granted, we live thousands of miles apart, but I still think it's their loss. I liked your poem. Ulla:)))

Times are so different from when I was growing up. We used to have traditional Sunday dinners at my grandmother's home, complete with homemade bread. Card playing was a pastime and sewing was a standard skill for women. Even the way language was spoken was a little different; I remember once when my grandpa used the word 'dasn't'. I asked what it meant and my grandma said it was an old-fashioned way of saying "dare not'. I cherish all these memories and wish I could go back to those times. Thank you for bringing them back to me.
There was just one line that had me wondering about a spelling, here it is: "that's lesving little time for me." I think LESVING may be a type for the word leaving. Best wishes.

Hey Jaybird!
Nice poem and the topic runs true! I too am a grandparent and I never see my grandkids - they don't write or call, but they are 'socially active' online - big deal - I want grandma time - not facebook time like all their other 'friends' that they don't even know.
I also picked up a typo: that's lesving little time for me - I bet you want to replace that 's' with an 'a'.
Hugs, Sunshine, Rainbows and Unicorns from my heart to yours
