This has a string sense of responsibility and inner strength to it - albeit strength realised a little too late but now married to a determination to right wrings where possible and build a better future. Beautifully expressed.

This is a well written poem about a man who understands his greed and pride has ruined his and his family's life. It is good that he prays and hay his son doesn't repeat his mistakes and have lifelong regrets of his own.
Keep writing and stay healthy.

nomi338: I believe that so many have taken the road that you describe in this poem. This behavior destroys so many people and makes their lives so very difficult. I think of the women with totally responsibility for their children. I cry with the children who long for their fathers'. I could feel the pain, confusion within this poem. A great job of telling this story that way too many people recognize. Linda

Thank you Linda. When I wrote this poem, I tried to put myself in the cramped shoes of a man whose life had gone off the rails so to speak. He is forced to face all the things he did wrong, including the failure of his parents giving him things without rules of conduct.

We do our best as parents to give our children a better life than we had ourselves, we make sacrifices in the hope to give them luxuries. I agree with you that excess can lead to complacency and ungratefulness. When we realise how hard life can be in the real world we appreciate what our parents did for us and how life is not always easy. We all make mistakes and the key is not to repeat them and forgive ourselves for the past, much enjoyed, a poignant write, love Dolly x

Thank you Dolly. I hope you know how much I value your opinions of things that I write. The knowledge that such gifted writes like you are reading me, keeps me editing over and over with an eye to getting it right and not being a lazy writer, always reaching for the low hanging fruit.

Thank you for sharing this poem with us. I do agree giving children too much is never a good thing. I don't understand why parents can't give of their time and love, instead possessions. That's never good. Children need loved and guidance.

Agreed, every parent wants their children to have more than they had growing up, but sometimes the pursuit of those things take away the time when you could and should be giving them something more important, your attention, your guidance, and your love

First, I am glad it is not biographical, but it is a reality for so many who far too late realize the damage they have done to their own lives and the harm and hurt they have done to others.
The narrative is so compelling that most can identify at least one person who has made these mistakes and as to the regrets, they hope at least that person has regretted his mistakes.
Best wishes and regards,
Mary

Thank you Mary. For me it was my eldest daughter, who sadly lost her life as a result.

I am reading this on Saturday with no sixes to give. It is well done. I never thought it was biographical, I think I know the kind of man you are through your work. It is remarkable that you can "become this person" in writing this poem. Excellent work. Terry.

I'm afraid this outstanding poetic study will hit home with many, looking back to when they put all the wrong things first, time moving on without them. Thanks for sharing. I wish I had a six.

This is an excellent poem that describes the life of so many young people who aren't guided as they mature and make mistakes they will regret the rest of their lives. It sounds as though the person in your poem has done so soul searching and realizes his mistakes. It is never too late for a change of direction. One might not get back what they've lost, but from the point they acknowledge the past, they can move forward and learn from their mistakes.

You and I share similar opinions. This poem was not about any one person in particular, but about all the sad lives ruined by drug abuse in general. Thank you for your generous comments.

Very well written, and I wish I had a six left for you. You have expressed perfectly what some people feel, a deep sense of regret at poor decisions and choices and the burden of th e consequences. It has the ring of authenticity and is meaningful.
