You've made effective use of language to convey the helplessness felt by those who cannot help. At the end of the day, that's the worst horror of all. Beautifully written and a solid read.

I agree - feeling helpless while a catastrophe unfolds, whether at a specific time or due to continuing circumstances - is surely horrific.
    Thanks for your review.

I am certain that this entry will gather the most attention. The horror of a school shooting, something that is true and right in front of us, would be difficult to outdo with fiction.

Life packs a punch. Death even more so. They say 'Truth hurts' for a reason.

Wonderfully written. However, it saddens me that we are writing these pieces as non-fiction horror. It is hard to believe how little progress we have made. Best JohnC

My piece isn't non-fiction. That horror is real. I totally agree with you about the lack of progress... more and more often parents are having to bury their kids.

The shooting at the school was horrendous and immensely sad, but it's the CRAZIES WITH THE GUNS, who are responsible. If there had been someone in the school WITH A GUN, trained to protect and deflect, this tragedy might have been prevented. That, and more attention paid to the mentally disturbed.
Also, it is the responsibility of school boards to protect the children in their schools. They didn't follow precautionary procedures.
I gave you a 5 for your poem even though I disagree with your premise.

Thank you for appreciating my poem with your review. I agree with you about it being the crazies with guns who cause the damage - I mentioned it by referring to a madman. You say you disagree with my premise - what premise do you detect? Is it because I said 'gun-obsessed'? It's obvious many Americans love guns and get very uptight if their right to bear arms is questioned. Why do Americans have more guns than the entire population? Why are assault weapons so readily available for easy purchase? Why does the NRA spend so much money on lobbying politicians? Guns are a national obsession.

You might want to put your word count in your Author's notes. My wife and I are both teachers. She teaches third grade and has already told me if her school has a shooter she probably won't be coming home. Good luck in the contest.

I took your advice and put in the word count - it is 99. I made sure I was within the limit.
As teachers, what a terrible thought to even have to consider! I pray you both keep safe.
