Very timely work here, LisaMay. There is such a cultural acceptance of school-shootings, it seems. We report, we mourn, and then we move on to the next one. It is almost as if our society has accepted them as part of the fabric, the acceptable risk. This past incident and all that came before it are absolute tragedies. The next will be a tragedy, too, until we can come up with some way to ensure they do not happen again. Works like the one you've provided here will not only help chronicle, but also provide clear exemplars of a society that is done with the violence. Thank you for sharing this important work.

The social situation in USA is very different to Australia and New Zealand, 2 countries I am familiar with and both of which enacted changes to gun laws.
It is a terrible thing when tragedy becomes an accepted occurrence.

On a different political level, this comment resonated with me years ago: Golda Meir, former prime minister of Israel, when Palestinians were using their children as suicide bombers then calling them martyrs - she said: the problem will only be solved when they love their children more than they hate us.
Possibly a similar thought could be introduced to USA - people must love their children more than they love guns.

It's numbingly awful. But of course it will happen again, and often.

This piece is "horror" throughout, from the first sentence to the last. Perhaps because of recent events but in any case, true horror, not make believe.

I hate to say it, but message well received.

This is a living nightmare. We never know when they will strike. More security must be rounded up and put into our schools. It may cost more taxes, but it is worth doing. The United States bombs places, then turns around and replaces them. Why can they not hire security for our children?
It is so sad what happened, and if something is not done, it will keep happening.

I think we can assume nothing will be done except more crying when it happens again.

This is a very good poem of the sad account of the horrific shootings at schools; not just last week, but as the many copycats and other troubled people have killed so many since Columbine years ago, it's time for action. What is the answer, I don't know, but I do know that it's time to start listening to the troubled kids while we can still reach them, and maybe someone will see how much good it has done to take God out of school, government and now out of our country.

I agree with you that God should have been allowed to stay in schools. A vacuum is always filled - often with the wrong things.

The subject of this poem is truly horrific. I can't imagine how the families of the victims are feeling right now. Thank you for this tribute to the little lives lost.

It is truly tragic. When a madman went on a rampage at a famous tourist site in Tasmania, he shot and killed 36 people, including women and children, the government went into action and banned non essential guns, there has never been a mass shooting since. The government did it under great opposition, the courage of the incumbent prime minister and his deputy was to be commended, beautifully written, blessings Roy

I remember that Port Arthur massacre in 1996. It only took 12 days for laws to be passed. The results are clear... no more mass shootings.

The author's words are so true, they are heartfelt, sad, fearful and creative. I pondered on the theme of this poem - will things ever change? The poem flows and connects well. The artwork is perfect and goes well with these words. Have a great weekend!

An excellent poem which expresses this horror most vividly. I cannot imagine a worse horror. I still can't understand the obsession with guns "to keep us safe". A sense of safety can never be experienced when so many have guns - and without appropriate checks. Your rhyme and metre are smooth, your language is powerful and effective. Best wishes for your very worthy entry. I am sorry I only have fives left.

Yes. There is nothing more horrifying than to know that your child is the victim of a madman - except maybe to not know for sure and have to wait and hope and fear while maybe unspeakable things are done to your baby. Very well written poem. Good luck in the contest! But not too good, because I am also competing, and this poem is really great!
