It would be nice if folks would pay it forward by treating them to a meal or even just a coffee or drink sometime. They would appreciate it.

"Show don't tell"
That says it all.
"Thank you for your service" may well be heartfelt, but too often is a knee-jerk response to recognize someone in uniform.
I am sad to report there were and are no parades, memorials, or events planned in my area for Armed Forces Day. There are some for Memorial Day.
A zoo in a neighboring town is offering discounted admissions for Service Members. (That's it...)
I appreciate what you have shared. Particularly as my dad served as a Marine in WWII ~ and he taught us early and often he was not and would never be an ex-Marine.
I travel to Shirley, MA ~ the town my dad is buried in - on Memorial Day. That little New England Town is big on patriotism and appreciation for all our men and women of every branch of the service, past, and present.
When I did a stint as an RN on the Vietnam PTSD ward, I saw the living sacrifices enduring... It was an honor to listen to them, serve them, and make their day just a little more tolerable.
It takes so little time to make a care package or sit and listen to whatever one who served or serves our country wants to share.
We all should do more. Perhaps reading this will spur someone to action.
I pray so,
Karenina

I may not be American, but I'm fully on board with your message. I've learned some things about military nomenclature and role taxonomy (couldn't resist - I work in information management so these terms are familiar). This is a well written piece, and I found it very interesting.

You have educated me here. I like how you clarify the differences between the armed services and the differences between the holidays. I do not think many know how they should address the marines, sailors and soldiers. You make it very clear here. My father served three years of combat in WWII, so I appreciate your essay.
