Gnarled Fingers
The working hands of an old country woman28 total reviews

Those fingers of the hand of women who worked so hard. One, my grandmother. She worked so hard. I do not know how she did it. The kids of today have no clue what hard work is about. I enjoyed reading your work. Have a great day.

Thanks for reading my poem and rating it. I agree most youth today do not grasp physical labor and more importantly self-sacrifice. We live in a me-me-me-era.

You are welcome.

A tribute to hard work. People who tend to those sorts of things don't get enough recognition. I liked "Washing dishes chipped with age", and the part about the green beans.

Yes. You really do have the proverbial way with words. We're focused on the hands, to be sure-- but oh, we know this woman's heart and determination! No force on earth like a woman with a purpose!

Do you know how many members are on this site?
-
I don't think it's listed anywhere...
A rough guess would be about 2,500 listed members (just perusing through the "Find a member" function under the "Community" tab)--
Then there are those who have work listed here although they have passed on ~ because they have purchased the "Eternal Flame." How MANY of those listed members are currently active in posting or reviewing is quite another question! I've clicked on many a name to find no posts or reviews...
Hope that helps!

Thank you for your help. Be blessed!

You as well!

Hi Sandra,
Loved the way you painted the image with a vivid purpose.
And yes, love the final stanza...
'Gnarled fingers mirror a tranquil grace'.
Wonderfully presented and composed.
With our thoughts we create...
the toil of time.
Kind regards,
James.

In one sense though age depletes the physical, the compensation is extreme wisdom, to be able to work out what is important not urgent, well done, a fabulous work, and excellent free style poem, blessings Roy

Sandra,
This is so true of any hard working country housewife, or mother in general. The artwork matches the words well and is a fitting post for the club.
Keep writing and stay healthy

This has a lot of polish to it, and it really reminds me of Linda Marion's Shaky Earth or Ruth Garnet's A Move Further South. The free verse form contains this natural voice, softly spoken, very intimate, and The images of the gnarled hands snapping beans puts us in touch with the sense of the simple life, just keeping food on the table, and also the sense of taking up from one generation where that generation leaves off. It's like the gnarled fingers handing us those beans to snap for ourselves. estory

There's some gorgeous language in here. I particularly admire your last three lines. This is told with utter respect and a sense of lessons we can all learn no matter how long we live, from those who've also lived. Great piece.

Thank you, Mike, for reading my poem and rating it. Elders in the West do not get the respect that is typically given in the Asian and African cultures. It's a damn shame.

This is a very good and well written poem you have penned for the Hands event in the Free Versers Club. You used great descriptive words and great art work. I have an aunt whose fingers are kind of like that too from arthritis. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes in the contest. love and blessings, Teri

The gnarled hands are beautiful, hard-working, and diligent, having served with love throughout life. The image is lovely and your words remind one of the value of the older generation - they deserve our acknowledgement and respect. Beautiful poem.
