What a fun story, simply because you have such a knack for taking the most mundane topics and making them enjoyable. I love the idea of the contest, and I definitely give credit to whoever thought it up. I'm sorry you weren't the first to submit the name, but "Hammeroid" is definitely the perfect name for an object that's such a pain in the butt.

    Hi Michele,
thanks for your comments - this building project is being very disruptive so a bit of levity was rather welcome in the community. There were lots of entries, several for 'Hammeroid'. Great minds think alike.

How much do you want to bet many of those people with great minds are also pains in the butt?

Lisa,
Your informative, well-researched prose reads really, and you know how to make your story interesting.
Our town went through a revamp of our main thoroughfare for 2 years, and it made for tedious driving.
It would have been nice if you had won with"hammeroid."Thanks for the laugh on that name.
Good luck with all your endeavors, Lisa.
Blessings,
Cindy

LM,

hahahaha! When I saw the title of this post - and BEFORE I'd popped over -- I thought, ahhhh... she's made a post about me to pay me back. haha!

This was a lot of fun. I cannot imagine the din all that construction is making and GOING to make. That was certainly a clever name for the huge hammer. I might have thought a hundred years and never come up with that. Nice job! Thanks for the smile! BTW - how do you pronounce the name of your town? AND what's the population?

I would have said 'ass' if that were true, haha.

    Dunedin is pronounced Dun-eee-din.
    The population is about 128,000.
Here's some brief information from the internet:
'Dunedin is a city in New Zealand, at the head of Otago Harbour on the South Island?s southeast coast. It's known for its Scottish and Maori heritage, Victorian and Edwardian architecture, and a large student population. Hiking and cycling trails crisscross the dramatic landscape of the adjoining Otago Peninsula, home to colonies of albatross, sea lions and rare yellow-eyed penguins.'

Well written and amusing. Hammeroid is a cracking name for such an object - shame someone else thought of it too.
One suggestion - might be better to say "The City of Dunedin where I live....."
It reads a little easier, but no big deal. Thank you.

What a great idea for a name for the Hammer. LOL It's a shame you didn't get your entry in first, but you can be living proof that great minds do think alike. You do get bragging rights there. LOL I believe the name is perfect for the tool. Well done, Lisa. Nancy:)

Thanks, Nancy. This constant thumping noise is going to drive the residents mad.

I am sorry that your entry was not the first, but it does not diminish the fact that your creativity and imagination shined.
It was a clever entry and the contest judges agreed.
Best wishes,
Mary

Well done and bad luck! How annoying to have got the same answer as the winner but deprived of the prize by Old Father Time. When you published the shortlist in an earlier paragraph I too though Hammeroid should win - cold comfort for you, I'm afraid.

The city centre itself does seem an odd place for a hospital.

    Thanks for the commiserations.
They've stuck the hospital right near the central business zone. They wanted it near the university because of the medical school.

I knew you would have something brilliant! And it was. Just a big pity you weren't the first to email it in, Terrible to have such disruption for years, but hopefully it will be worth it. That's what is called progress!! No pain, no gain. I hope that your home is not within earshot of all this. Well written.

It sounds like this could be quite noisy project Lisa? Your suggestion won! Take a pat on the back and I hope the disruption will be worth it in the end, a fine informative story, love Dolly x

When I read the list, I guessed it was Hammeroid - and that you coined it. You're the pro at creating names (I use the "newsamuse" all the time now) and I was expecting you to win. But apparently, someone else entered the contest before you? Congrats anyway!
