Nice free verse! I'd never have guessed you were a "Landlubber"--this reads as true as if you'd experienced it all yourself! I love the sea--but, like you, prefer to haze at those ships from the shore! Nice alliteration, fine descriptions, lots of authentic sailing terms and done in a style of verse I am just now learning to (attempt to) write in!

Over the past month I've posted three or four...after some fifty years of largely rhymed verse. I find free verse fascinating!

Awesome, I am going to look them up!! I am literally - three years into learning to write poetry. I stuffed this part of my soul while in corporate life and started writing after I retired.

I've written as a hobby and avocation since I was eleven...my career was in Nursing. Now retired, I write for my pleasure and an occasional published bit here or there. I stuck to pretty much rhyming poetry for most of my years. A few poets here really touched me with their free verse and encouraged me to give it a try. I think three or four of my last five or six are free verse. It's very (here's a surprise) FREEING! Releasing the rhyme and meter and letting the words flow! (smile)

There is so much great alliteration here, it is hard to know where to start. The sounds of your onomatopoetic words brings this painting alive. We can hear the bells, the men in their excitement, the splashing of the water, the winds, the banging of the barrels. There is even the rocking rhythm of the lines to mimic the boat's motion.
