What a sad story. Life is sometimes just horrible. Sometimes we expect too much or just expect that bad things won't happen to us.
For me, it's even bad that people kill beautiful ducks. Can't let myself dwell on this stuff,
You've got lots of good thoughts here though.

What a sad story, and I can fully understand why you didn't quite know the point you were making at the end. It's hard to make sense of a death so random and senseless.
I understand the need for hunting, if that's how you put food on the table, but I've never understood hunting as a sport. Nor have I ever understood the need for anyone but military, police, or hunters (for food) to own weapons, and certainly not for any but the military to own automatic or semi-automatic weapons. Of course, that's just my opinion (and that of the tens of thousands of Americans who've lost friends and family to gun violence).

When it is your time to go it is your time to go. That is what my husband says all the time. You never know when something is going to happen so learn to appreciate it while you can.

This is a riveting and thought-provoking story. It wounds as though you have a healthy respect for both human and animal life (won't kill Lily's mouse). I went hunting once, over fifty years ago, and still remember crying after I shot a groundhog. Life IS random, and we should be grateful for every day we see.

I went hunting once, over forty years ago, and my husband shot a rabbit... I cried when I went to pick its body up, when I discovered it wasn't dead. My husband wondered why I was taking so long to come back... I was down on my knees beside it, stroking its nose and murmuring 'please hurry up and die, darling little one.'

A though-provoking piece of non-fiction and quality writing. I'm more inclined to think that bad decision making is the culprit here disguised as the fickle finger of fate. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for reviewing. I guess he figured there'd be no one driving on that short stretch of little-used road at that time of night. It was surely a bad decision for the driver to flee the scene. It was probably a local so when the driver is found out there will be hell to pay.

This was a good story to share here. I am sorry for the tragedy at the end. I like your phrasing, like "fickle finger of fate." Thanks for sharing, and best wishes.

This is a sad story, Lisa. As I was reading I thought you were going to tell us one of the hunters ad been shot accidently. No matter the cause of death it does make you wonder if he had died at home in bed that night. Good Job. Nancy:)

LM,
Oh, no! I was just sure you were going to say someone had been shot. But to be hit by a car was really unexpected. Did the driver keep going, then? Which would make you wonder if there was also alcohol involved there, too. So tragic! Things do seem so unfair and random sometimes.
Thanks for sharing. So sad!

Yes, he was knocked down and the driver didn't stop. Maybe the driver was drunk and didn't realise he'd hit something.

How sad that a man so young lost his life. I am with you both on hunting and guns. In this day and age, hunting deer, duck, etc is just a sport rather than a necessity of food. You already commented on our gun culture in the US some states have and want no need for training or licensing for carrying a firearm.

I shudder about guns. More and more people are getting them - too many people are angry and crazy these days and the guns will obviously be used.

Soldiers used to say, and probably still do, 'If it's got your name on it you'll get it.' In the end it is just a matter of luck. survivors of conflict often suffer pangs of guilt - 'Why them and not me?'
You can take all the precautions you like and still the reaper comes calling when another who is a seasoned risk taker never gets touched. There is no justice.

The reaper will come any old time, most often quite unexpectedly it seems. To die peacefully in our beds at 100 is utterly rare; shot by a jealous lover at that age even rarer.

The jealous lover option was always my ambition. Lol.

was... or is?
