Dear Author--
Stunning use of twelve words to convey the experience of all who brave the ferry! Very nice how you folded in the seasonal reference, as a nod to traditional haiku...
I happen to love ferry rides and smiled at
your reference to the mist!
Comprehensive author notes held my interest as well!

K,
Ever take a ride on this ferry? Thanks for your Haiku nod!

Sure did! If there is a ferry within 300 miles of me, I've taken it!

Ciao poet, you now have three votes.
Lake Maggiore has three picturesque islands and there is a ferry service that takes tourists and not to reach them and other towns by the lakeside.
One particular time , the weather was very windy and in three we took the ferry to get to Verbania.
I remember we dared the elements and stepped out side and the spray of the lake water hit our faces and coats.
It was exciting but dangerous too... but when young, doing crazy is fun.
I enjoyed reading the detailed info in note s section.

Thanks for your continuous support fir my poems Tempeste!
I traveled that ferry boat all four years of my high school. Each I walked to the bust, then took the ferry boat, then an underground train and then walked 3 blocks to school. As a student it was not onerous, but for the adult workers their day was much longer.

That was a long itinerary..
it still must have been tough on you in the winter.
No doubt you had a strong constitution.
I personally could not have face such a tour de force not even in my teens.

Thanks Jan! I know of this ride. I commuted for four years on it and infrequently sat outside, when no seats were available inside, in the winter weather. Typically I only faced the cold winds when getting off the boat.

My wife and I journeyed on the Staten Island ferry a few times in our 4 visits to New York from 2010 till 2014, we enjoyed the ride each time, and yes, we have journeyed on a number of ferries around the world, and that is the only free one we've been on, although never as crowded as that one in the photo, beautifully written, blessings Roy

Thanks Roy!
I commuted on that Ferry for four years. Infrequently, during evening rush hours, especially during the cold months, I was forced to sit outside on the middle deck promenade, because no seating was available inside. While the seats had cover, the cold winds had its way with me.

We always went during non rush hours, the first time in early January with ice and snow, but the day was sunny, had a lovely lunch in a local pub, then went back to Manhattan, my daughter?s family lived there for four years, love New York, went there every season, we are Aussies my daughter returned in 2014.

This is only a thought - not a criticism, but there's a lot of detail in your notes and by the time I'd finished reading them, I had to go back and remind myself of the poem! It seemed a shame, as they both appear to be pieces in their own right. Have you considered posting the notes as nonfiction writing, separate from your poetry?

Sarah,
The notes are not mine. They are copied/clipped from the internet. With regard to the poem?s notes, my guess is that many FS participants are not aware of the Staten Island Ferry and/or that Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of the City of New York. IMHO a reviewer should decide on the merit of the poem without regard to the notes provided or the artwork that accompanies the post.

Oh, that was very conscientious of you, getting notes off the Internet. I'm from England and I've never been to New York, but I do know about the Staten Island ferry. I think it might be as famous as 5th Avenue, the statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building.

Riding on a ferry is quite the adventure. I loved the open window ride. But I do know that some ferries are not safe to ride on when they sink into the waters.
The MS Estonia ferry sank as it was crossing from Tallinn to Stockholm in September 1994, killing 852 people. A 1997 investigation found that the ship's bow door locks had failed in a storm. But new underwater footage appears to show a previously unrecorded four-meter (13ft) hole in the ship's hull.

Wow, the Steam Island ferryboats have never sank. Maybe in bad weather the ride is a bit rough, but it is not an ocean-going vessel.

Rosemary,
While your rating was not in sync with other reviewers, I just received the following notice about that poem:
Staten Island Ferry - read notes has been selected to be shown on the welcome page! It has been displayed on the "Well Received" section of the home page.
Your post will be featured for a couple of hours to a full twenty four hours.

This post is well written and brings back happy memories. My husband and I were voluntary standees since he didn't care for the company of the pigeons in the enclosed seating area
So we enjoyed the ride and tried to ignore the beady-eyed gulls LOL
Good luck in the voting booth
Stay safe and blessed

Julia,
As a kid, we brought bread crumbs with us to entice the seagulls/pigeons to dip for our snacks. I also sat on the outside middle deck in the cold weather (but only during evening rush hour when I did not want to stand in heavy clothes for the 30 minutes on/off). It was covered, but exposed to the wintry winds.

It was a fun freebie for us as retired people trying to settle in our new country. I recall composing a haiku on the ride, the summer sun had transformed the water into sparkling sequins.

This sounds like an exciting ride on the ferry and the fare is minimal too and this famous ferry is busy too. I loved the photograph of this unique and vintage ferry. You brought the journey to life here, I wish I could try it, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

Dolly,
Should you ever cross the big pond, consider adding that ferryboat ride as a bucket list thing to do. The new ferries no longer carry cars, but during rush hour 5,000 commuters stand and sit for the 30 minutes on/off time. At one time, the middle level had an outdoor covered promenade with benches. When seating inside was unavailable, it was an experience to sit outside in the cold weather. While today?s ferryboat design has been spiffed up and modernized, the boats look the same as they did 60+ years ago. Of course, now there is no fare to pay!

I enjoyed your poem - I could picture the mist on their faces. However, I really enjoyed your author's notes. I never knew about all of that, and it was very informative. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Jessi!
I commuted on that ferry for four years! I paid a nickel each way. There was no monthly rate. Sometimes during the rush hour, when no seats were available inside, I sat on the covered outside middle deck as cold weather and wind chilled my bones!

As often as I've visited New York, I've never ridden on the Staten Island Ferry. It still sounds like a bargain, and the view alone would be worth the ride. You did a great job with the challenge you were given, great picture, and insightful author's note.

Thanks Pam for your review. The (free) ride should make your bucket list. It is a glorious view on a sunny day. You also get to see a stately lady, besides the NYC skyline. I commuted on this ferry for four years!
